What classes do you need to take to become an Astronomer? I am interested in the stars and planets.

To be an astronomer, one must take physics. Astronomy is a subdiscipline of physics. Contact your local college or university for more infromation on this major.

Hi Latoshia-
If you would like to see some examples of astronomy classes that you might take in college take a look at the University of Illinois web site at http://www.astro.uiuc.edu. Click on the class schedule for the Fall that is listed under the News and Announcements.
I did not major in astronomy, but I did take a college class that made me change the way I view the universe. It was called Concepts of the Cosmos and it explained how different people throughout history explained the astrophysics found in the universe. As science advances more and more is known about the universe, but there is still plenty to discover. If you pursue astronomy it will make star gazing a much more interesting passtime!
