Q: (Initially posted on April 23, 2003) FROM MENTEE SANNA R. IN VA
Why is "full spectrum light" better for you? My mom always tells me that I
need to go outside after using indoor lights in order to refocus on reading.
Does it really help?

A: FROM MENTOR ELEANORA ROBBINS IN CA
I don't really know much about full spectrum light, but I did read an article in the paper this week about Vitamin D deficiency in babies because mothers are slathering them with sunscreen (as they should). D has to do with skeleton and muscle development. I looked at this website (www.health.com/health/wellness/remedies/ 0,12884,215172,00. html) and read that African Americans especially have to worry about this because melanin acts as a sunscreen. The website says that paleskins need 15 minutes of sun three times a week. We old field scientists get our Vitamin D (and strong bones and aching muscles) without even having to think about this issue!
