Q: (Initially posted on May 1, 2003) FROM MENTEE AMANDA M. IN NY
What are some of the SET careers that have the highest female employment rate? Do you think this rate will go up any higher?

May 5, 2003
A: FROM MENTOR SUZANNE FRANKS IN KS
The biological sciences and the social sciences generally have the highest
percentage of women. In some areas they are approaching 50% or more, but
usually only at the undergraduate level. As you go along to graduate
school and the ranks of professors you see fewer and fewer women. Also in industry
you see fewer women as you go higher in rank of responsibility.
Yes, I do think these rates will continue to get higher, not just in the
biological sciences, but also in the physical sciences and engineering,
because I and other women (and some men) like me will not rest until we have
achieved equity across the board!
