Q: (Initially posted on May 6, 2003) FROM MENTEE ALICIA T. IN CA
What type of community service or internships would look good on a college application or would help to expand my view in the medical field, especially at hospitals? I have looked into being a candy striper, but it doesn't exactly fit what I want to do with my time. I would like to do something that shows what it takes to be a doctor and what they really do in everyday situations.

A: FROM MENTOR DIANA DIONISIO IN CA
I had the same thoughts that you did when I was thinking of volunteer positions. I pictured candy stripers as girls at the reception desk that did errands for nurses and doctors, but I'm not trying to put them down becuase you have to start somewhere to get some kind of experience in the medical field. I called around different hospitals and asked about their volunteer programs. I found one specifically for students interested in medicine. While I had to do errands and make up emergency room beds, I also got to take vitals signs and watch a procedure once in a while. You might want to get hands on type experience, but understand that it takes a lot of school to be trained and hospitals want to ensure the safety of their patients so they won't have you do anything too involved just yet.
