Q: (Initially posted on May 13, 2003) FROM MENTEE ROSANA P. IN NJ
Is the GEM-SET program a good [extracurricular activitiy] to put on your
college application?

A: FROM MODERATOR SARAH SHIRK IN IL
Yes, mention your participation in GEM-SET both on the application and in the interviews. GEM-SET is important both as a mentoring program and as a virtual community. Showing the admission staff that you have the skills to handle electronic communications and the ability to network with professionals will be very impressive. Also many schools are focusing on ways to increase the enrollment of females in SET majors. If this is an interest for you, then you should highlight that in your interview and application also.

A: FROM MENTOR DIANA DIONISIO IN CA
It's nice to be involved in activities, but don't do it just to look good on your college application. If you do something you enjoy, it will be better because colleges look at leadership positions and your commitment to your activity as well. If you like what you're doing, you're going to stick with it.
