Q: (Initially posted on May 19, 2003) FROM MENTEE ZENOBIA B. in CA
What kind of engineering is involved in cloning?

A: FROM MENTOR REGINA SIZEMORE IN KY
Zenobia:
Biotechnology is all the buzz right now and I feel as though those areas in
biotechnology will be the ones that most of the major scientific discoveries
will be made in the next 25 years. I know that Chemical Engineers are doing
a great deal with biotechnology. I have heard it said that chemical
engineers are so well trained they can work in any field. There are a great
many college programs that work with the biology/chemistry departments and
engineering departments to form separate biotechnology programs. Since you
are in California, I would check with the University of California system
about their biotechnology programs. I am sure they could give you some good
advice as well.

Good luck.

A: FROM MENTOR MINI VARUGHESE IN MD
Cloning requires expertise in molecular biology, cell biology, developmental biology, and various other disciplines associated with it. So this is more life science and medical science rather than engineering. I can see applications for a biotechnology engineer in terms developing equipment to maintain and sustain a cloned cell that could develop into an organ or tissues. Later on, maybe even an artificial womb.
