Q: (Initially posted on June 23, 2003) FROM MENTEE LAUREN S. IN CT
What sort of fields in science don't involve a whole lot of math?

June 25, 2003
A: FROM MENTOR MOLLY WILLIAMS IN MI
Lauren, most sciences require mathematics. The heaviest use is in
the physical sciences and engineering. The least use of mathematics
is in the biological sciences. However, even there, you will have
to be familiar with statistics and with using graphs to present
results. I suspect you've had some bad experiences with
mathematics, and you haven't had the opportunity to use it in
situations where it is really helpful. I hope that as you learn
more mathematics you'll see how much it is needed to analyze and to
present information.

A: FROM MENTOR DIANA DIONISIO IN CA
A lot of science classes involve math because they are pre-requisites to classes like chemistry and physics and most science majors overlap with general education requirements and require all the different sciences. Biology generally involves less math then chem, and physics majors require more math.
