Q: (Initially posted on October 6, 2003) FROM STUDENT MEMBER RUTH IN CA
I need help with chemistry and math analysis. Do you know anyone in the San
Diego Area (especially around the Oceanside area) that can tutor me. I'm
having a hard time finding someone willing to tutor me in the weekend or in the
early evenings due to my busy schedule in band.

A: FROM MENTOR SUZANNE FRANKS IN KS
Ruth, you might try finding a tutor at a college campus near you. Many
times, mathematics and chemistry students at universities are willing to tutor for money. They usually tutor other college students but
I have a friend who made money as an undergraduate student by tutoring a
high school student in mathematics and chemistry. She was actually a physical
chemistry student. So you might find one person who could help you with both subjects. You might want to have a parent or guardian call the chemistry and/or math department office at a local university and ask them if they know of students who would be willing to tutor you for money. They may be able to put you in touch directly with a student, or they may tell you where/how you can advertise for a tutor (for example, putting up a flyer with tear-off strips on a department bulletin board.)
Talk to the department secretaries - they are the ones who can really help
you in this, much more so than the professors. That's true about a lot of stuff, now and when
you finally arrive at college yourself! The secreteries know everything...always be nice to them, for they can really help you out....or, make your life more difficult if you aren't nice to them! Good luck finding a tutor!
