Q: (Initially posted December 26, 2003) FROM JAE Y. in TX
Does community service matter in order to get into a good university?

December 29, 2003
A: FROM MENTOR MOLLY WILLIAMS IN MI
Community service is not absolutely necessary for college admission,
but it's one of several activities that help to demonstrate that you
have some breadth of interest. Many colleges look for not only
acceptable grades in academic subjects but also other evidence that
you are a well-rounded citizen. That includes extracurricular
activities like sports or music and also non-school organizations
like religious or community volunteer groups or even political
organizations. None of these individual activities is absolutely
critical, and you shouldn't try to do so much that you can't do
anything well. However, finding a few extra activities will give
you some valuable experience, and they will look good on your
college application. So, in addition to required school subjects,
you should try to find a few extra activities that you enjoy and can
fit into your schedule. Community service is one of several good
choices.
