New Questions
********************
Q: (Initially posted November 26, 2003) FROM MEMBER SANNA
R. IN VA
What is happening with the hole in the ozone layer right now?
I understand it
changes size in natural cycles, so how much are we (and cows)
affecting it?
Also, how much do hybrid cars help in reducing the amount
of emissions?
********************
Q: (Initially posted November 21, 2003) FROM MEMBER CRYSTAL
D. IN TX
Do you know about the space probe being sent out into the
sun's atmosphere in 2007?
Well we briefly discussed that in science class ......how
big is it? What's it made of?
When will it come back? How long will it take to get there?
What if it doesn't make it?
********************
Q & A (Answers are posted below the question.)

Q: (Initially posted November 26, 2003) FROM MEMBER ROBIN

In my physics mechanics class, we're learning about some things
that the
teacher has trouble explaining, or doesn't know. For example,
where does the
formula for finding a moment of inertia (ie, of a rectangle,
(bh^3)/3) come
from? And how does this number of "resistance to bending"
relate to the need
for different parts of an object to compress or stretch when
it bends? Or,
how are the equations affected by having a beam made out of
bendable rubber
instead of stiff steel? Or, when learning about hydrostatic
pressure, and
retaining walls to hold back earth, what exactly do the terms
"liquid" and
"solid" densities of dirt/ earth mean? I suspect
that the moment of inertia
comes from some calculus thing that I have not learned yet,
but I really
don't know. Hopefully one of you will understand these questions!

Hello. I am starting my first year of college and one of the
"fun" things that we get to do is pick classes.
Even though I am a theater major, I am very much interested
in science (geology, archeology, paleontology, forensic, genetic,
etc). One problem is, I don't want to jeopardize my GPA by
taking these classes. If the "grade" factor is not
there, I would take all the science classes that I want. I
know it sounds funny, but is there any advice that you can
give me so I could get the courage to take those classes?

I've just started the Outer Space unit today in my science
class.
How can the planets stay in their positions/places?
Like I think Pluto can switch places with another planet so
why can't Earth or Mars ... switch places?

In my Chemistry class our teacher is thinking about taking
a job at another school. We may get stuck with substitutes
for the whole year who don't have any science experience and
are not going to teach very well. Our teacher says that we
can learn it by ourselves if we read the book and study, but
the whole point of going to school is to have a teacher to
explain the material to us. It's going to be so difficult,
and I don't think I have the discipline to study the book
.Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? I want
to learn chemistry this year but I don't know how.

I have a few questions about hot air balloons.
We are doing gasses in my AP Chemistry class right now, and
I was wondering what the basic history of hot air balloons
is. What have they
used as the gas? How did they make the balloon? what materials
did they use?
What about cluster ballooning? My mom and I have always wanted
to go, so I
figure I should learn a little more first!

What is LASIK? I know that it is a procedure to correct your
vision, but how exactly does it work. What is the procedure?
is it the best method to correct your vision? and if you have
no other choice but to get LASIK, is it safe?

I really find that I like designing advertisements. But how
can that relate to GEM-SET?

How do plasma televisions really work? I hear you cannot keep
the image the
same for more than 15 minutes or the image sears itself onto
the
odd-dimensioned screen-- meaning you have to watch a distorted
image or only watch the
regular wide screen for less than 15 minutes. What is the
science behind this?
what is being done to improve it?
Thanks!

I live in Middle TN. So, I am considering going to somewhere
like MTSU or Tennessee Tech. I want to major in the Computer
Field, but I don't know if I should go to a Technical school
first or just go ahead and go to a 4 year college. If anyone
has any advice I would appreciate it. Thanks Joan and Leslie
for writing back to my question and concerns but I try to
get help from my counselor and teachers, but I feel like Teachers
don't care anymore. I know that most do, but still there are
some that do not, and I feel like I'm not getting any help
from anyone, that I keep getting bad advice. The teachers
tell you to ask if you didn't get it or don't understand but
when you do it's like they bite your head off. So, I do not
know what to do. Thanks.

I am doing a presentation called "Future Shock".
In it, I can cover any
subjects and disciplines and talk about what the experts predict
for our
future based on what is in the works now. My question for
everybody (and I
hope lots of people contribute) is if you can lead me in good
directions to
do research so I can make sure that I cover SET stuff really
well. I am
going to go to the library for books and would love recommendations
for that too.

Q: (Initially posted on 10/30/03) FROM MEMBER ASHLEY S. IN

I am planning on going to college. I really want to get accepted
into a good college, SO what are some good colleges I can
look at online and ask them to send me information?
If anyone knows any good websites or has any comments, I would
appreciate it.
I would like to stay close to my sister, but I'm not really
thrilled about staying really close to my home town. I at
least want to go to a college about 45 minutes away. I am
considering different colleges. I am really confused though,
because I want to go to a good college but I haven't passed
the ACT yet. When you apply for college and if you get accepted,
when do you tell them how you're going to pay for it or do
you? I have a lot of questions and I feel like the more I
ask the more they go unanswered. I ask but I feel no one is
answering my questions. I want to apply for scholarships but
some I can not, because I do not have a 3.0 GPA, I have a
2.75. So, I could not apply for the Coca Cola Scholarship.
Right now I feel like I'm not going to be accepted anywhere.
I really don't know what to do. If I apply online to a college,
how do I send the FEE? Do I just send it later or what?
THANKS!

[A few days ago,] I told one of my teachers I didn't have
my homework because the solar
storm messed up my computer (I've used the "dog ate it"
thing too many times).
Ok, I didn't really say that, but I would like to know more
about the solar
explosions and how it affects the Aurora Borealis. Our sunset
today was very
pink and beautiful and I wondered if that was part of the
consequences of
the storm.
