Q: (Initially posted on 10/31/03) FROM MEMBER SANNA R. IN VA
How do plasma televisions really work? I hear you cannot keep the image the
same for more than 15 minutes or the image sears itself onto the
odd-dimensioned screen-- meaning you have to watch a distorted image or only watch the
regular wide screen for less than 15 minutes. What is the science behind this?
what is being done to improve it?
Thanks!

[A few days ago,] I told one of my teachers I didn't have my homework because the solar
storm messed up my computer (I've used the "dog ate it" thing too many times).
Ok, I didn't really say that, but I would like to know more about the solar
explosions and how it affects the Aurora Borealis. Our sunset today was very
pink and beautiful and I wondered if that was part of the consequences of
the storm.

There are a some wildfires going on in Southern California right now, and I was wondering what in the smoke is harmful to humans? Will it cause any long term damage to the people who live in San Diego and breathe the smoke each day?

Q: (Initially posted on 10/30/03) FROM MEMBER ASHLEY S. IN TN
I am planning on going to college. I really want to get accepted into a good college, SO what are some good colleges I can look at online and ask them to send me information?  If anyone knows any good websites or has any comments, I would appreciate it.
I would like to stay close to my sister, but I'm not really thrilled about staying really close to my home town. I at least want to go to a college about 45 minutes away. I am considering different colleges. I am really confused though, because I want to go to a good college but I haven't passed the ACT yet.
When you apply for college and if you get accepted, when do you tell them how you're going to pay for it or do you? I have a lot of questions and I feel like the more I ask the more they go unanswered. I ask but I feel no one is answering my questions. I want to apply for scholarships but some I can not, because I do not have a 3.0 GPA, I have a 2.75. So, I could not apply for the Coca Cola Scholarship. Right now I feel like I'm not going to be accepted anywhere. I really don't know what to do. If I apply online to a college, how do I send the FEE? Do I just send it later or what?
THANKS!

I am really interested in criminal justice and forensic science, but lately I have become very interested in jobs in the FBI or the CIA. I was wondering, what kind of classes should I take in high school, and where should my other interests be? Also I would like to know more about what each [agency] does.

Q: (Initially posted on 10/29/03) FROM MEMBER ALEXIS K. IN VA
My question is about mercury, the stuff not the planet.
Some unnamed sixteen year old near
here was arrested for stealing mercury from his school and then traveling
all over with it. It contaminated the school, a number of people's home and
even a bus. The news said that the mercury cost about $250 but the toxic
clean up is over one million dollars. What is mercury, where does it come
from, and why is it so poisonous to people and soil? Is it dug up from the
earth and if so then why would it be a problem to toss it back into dirt?

Below is a response from MENTOR LISA KURZEJESKI  from IBM Systems Group
in Austin, TX

Mentoring is all about relationships. It is a two way street, a chance for
both the mentor and protege to learn from one another. In the GEM-SET
enviornment it is a multi-street relationship, which is even better.
GEM-SET provides a way to answer questions and receive several opinions,
enabling the protege to take the best of all worlds. Usually a mentor is
more experienced in a field of interest to both the mentor and protege, and
is available to assist and guide the protege on a multitude of topics.
Mentoring relationships are risk - free, and should be based on trust and
honesty. They provide great sounding boards for new ideas, guidance on
how-tos, and a wonderful avenue for information sharing. You are never too
old to have a mentor, or to be a mentor.

Below is a response from MENTOR NICOLE O'HARA, a biochemistry major at Rutgers University in NJ:
Mentoring brings together those who want help and those who would appreciate the help:-> I've never mentored in the past, but I came to have one in high school. She was a motivated and motivating guidance counselor who made me realize that I didn't have to struggle with the weight of my academic (and other) concerns alone. No one had ever offered me genuine, valuable advice and it meant a lot. At the same time, I realized that I had the ability to do the same thing for someone else. It's easy, it's free and it's inexhaustible. That would be my biggest piece of advice as a mentor: no matter what the nature of your problem is (personal, academic, etc) or where you are in your academic career (high school, college), there always exists a person or resource to provide help. It is your job to seek out that help and take advantage of every opportunity or resource you come across.

We're about to have a gubernatorial recall election here, and one of the

of voting machines? Which are commonly used, the most hi-tech, the most
cost-efficient, etc? What about the most reliable? How vulnerable are they
to being manipulated to favor a particular cause or candidate? Is there any

cost-efficient, etc? What about the most reliable? How vulnerable are they
to being manipulated to favor a particular cause or candidate? Is there any

If math is so important, what needs to happen so that we can have better math teachers? I would like math better if I had teachers that taught to the way I learn, and I don't believe that the way I learn is unusual because I hear my friends say the same criticisms of math teachers.

I need help with chemistry and math analysis. Do you know anyone in the San
Diego Area (especially around the Oceanside area) that can tutor me. I'm
having a hard time finding someone willing to tutor me in the weekend or in the
early evenings due to my busy schedule in band.

We're about to have a gubernatorial recall election here, and one of the
issues caught up in it is about voting machines. What are the different kinds
of voting machines? Which are commonly used, the most hi-tech, the most
cost-efficient, etc? What about the most reliable? How vulnerable are they
to being manipulated to favor a particular cause or candidate? Is there any
special kind of Science, Engineering, or Technology that makes them possible?

I am looking for volunteer internships that are related to science. [I am especially interested in working in a hospital setting. Do any mentors have tips on how to go about finding good internships for high school students?]
