Q: (Initially posted January 26, 2003) FROM STUDENT MEMBER KALEIGH S. IN CO
After reading the Mentor biographies on the bio page (see http://www.uic.edu/orgs/gem-set/mentors.htm) I am really interested in learning more about
Chemical Engineering. I Live in Denver,Colorado and the Mines seems to be one of
the best engineering schools around. What type of fields of engineering does
the school particularly cover, and is Chemical Engineering offered there?

A: FROM MENTOR KRISTIN EILENBERG
(Kristin's friend Margaret is a graduate of Colorado School of Mines and submits the following via Kristin:)

Check out the Colorado School of Mines web address at www.mines.edu. They have the
following engineering departments:

Chemical Engineering
Petroleum Engineering
Mining Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Civil Engineering
Environmental Engineering
Geological Engineering
Electrical Engineering

Mines has a great reputation nationwide. It has a very challenging
academic atmosphere and many Mines undergraduates have complained that
they have no life other than studying. Since it is a science and
engineering school, there are essentially no liberal arts classes offered,
other than a handful of required freshman courses.

I attended Mines as a graduate student and have nothing but good things to
say about it. Golden is a wonderful town, with Mines and Coors as the two
main employers. The small school size ensures that you can get to know
virtually everyone in your department, and the small class sizes enable
students to have relationships with their professors that would be
impossible at a larger school.

I only had one Chemical Engineering professor in my years at Mines - his
name is Art Kidnay. For more info on Chemical Engineering at Mines, visit
www.mines.edu/academic/chemeng.

A: FROM MENTOR MARCELINA MARTINEZ IN NM
As a student of the Colorado School of Mines I tend to agree that it is an excellent school. Biases aside however, Mines has been ranked among the top ten in the nation in various fields (namely materials science). Mines offers a wide variety of engineering degrees. You can find information at the following web site: http://www.mines.edu/academic/department.shtml. This should also help you understand the curricula and types of degrees available. I have a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and find it quite challenging and interesting. It also opens many doors to a variety of industries (i.e. food, petroleum, materials, etc). Good luck in your search for a school and program!

A: Yes, Colorado School of Mines covers Chemical Engineering, along with Geochemistry, Petroleum Engineering, Geological Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and more. You can find more information at www.mines.edu. Colorado School of Mines is indeed a very good engineering school.
