Q: (Initially posted February 9, 20040 FROM STUDENT MEMBER SHARON IN CA
Hi. I am a freshmen in high school. I recently took the SAT ll Korean test
and got a score of 720 out of 800. I have a chance to take the test again, and I
am wondering if it is worth taking it again? [Does the SAT result really have an influence on where one is going in science, engineering, and technology careers? What is more important test scores or on-the-job performance?]

I don't remember the exam score cut-offs, but that sounds like a good score.
Plus, the main reason for taking those SAT IIs is to get credit for the
introductory classes in college. If you want to place out of the 1st year
Korean course in college, then you should aim for a high score (I always
thought they were out of 5)?

The SATs are strange. Some schools use them a lot. Others don't. If you're
going into a science/tech career, they will look at your SAT results and
probably compare them to others. If you have a job in high school in
science/engineering/tech, then that's fabulous, and if you do well there, then
get a letter of recommendation from someone you work with. Most colleges will
look at the overall application - both your letters of rec and your SATs and
grades. Both are important: book-smarts and social-smarts :)

A: FROM MENTOR ROSE CLARK IN PA
The SAT scores do not make a difference in your career in SET directly. Once you have a job, it is on the job performance; however, you want to have the highest scores possible for applying to colleges. The admissions process is based on SAT and you will qualify for more financial assistance with higher scores. Depending on how high the scores are, you may even have colleges/universities competing for you and offering you full tuition to come to their university. Your score looks good but if you can do better it is in your best interest to take the SAT several times. Also, do not forget the high score GPA is also important.
Best Wishes,
Dr. Rose Clark, PA
