Q: (Initially posted March 22, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER SARA V. IN CA
I am interested in a college or university that combines my interests in
Medical (ENT) or speech / voice therapy rehab as well as seeking
professional training as a classical voice major, i.e. not only singing
but assisting people who have abused their voice or have voice quality
issues. I have excelled at honors and A.P. biology and have taken honors
chemistry. I plan to take honors physiology next year. Any suggestions as to
where to go and course work required?

A: FROM MENTOR MOLLY WILLIAMS IN MI
Sara, you have a good plan to combine your interest in music with a program
in therapy and rehabilitation. The university from which I just retired,
Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, Michigan), offers programs in speech
pathology and audiology and also in music performance, including vocal
music. You should be aware, however, that both of these academic programs
are very full of requirements, so it would not be possible to complete both
programs in just four years of college. At most institutions, programs in
health care require a lot of science and clinical practice, while the
programs in fine arts require a lot of music history, theory, and
performance.
