Q: (Initially posted April 7, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER MARA R. IN NJ
Do you agree with the idea that most females prefer engineering for service
or social issues? Are the majority of female engineers in the medical area?

A: FROM MENTOR MAYLING WONG IN IL
Mara,

As an active member of the Society of Women Engineers, I meet a large
number of women engineers from all over Chicagoland (where I live) and the
nation. From my unscientific survey of the people I come across, women
engineers are in the same areas as male engineers: cars, computers,
consumer goods, food, materials, military defense, research laboratories
(NASA, high energy physics), just to name a few in addition to the medical
field. However, I believe women bring their unique perspective on social
issues and service to the table in whatever job they have. For instance,
a woman who works in the food industry may bring new foods home so her
children and their friends can try it out. This is an easy and convenient
way to learn what is likely to succeed in the marketplace.
