WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE AN INVENTOR?
ARE YOU CREATIVE AND INQUISITIVE?
DO YOU LIKE TO LEARN NEW THINGS, YET HAVE FUN , TOO?
Did you ever wonder, how did they think of that?
or why does that work like that? Have you ever
had the idea to invent a new product or improve on an existing
one? Have you ever had a great science fair idea, but needed
help putting it together? Then join other teens at the Design
and Discovery Summer Institute, a place for girls entering
7th through 10th grade.
Working with The Intel Foundation and the Girl Scouts of
the USA, this program will help girls learn about the design
process. Through a series of experiments, they develop the
skills necessary to create a model of a new product or an
improved modification of an existing onehands-on experience
in engineering and design. Girls will be introduced to women
within the fields of science, engineering and technology who
will serve as mentors in the research and creation of their
projects. In addition, they will learn team building skills
and participate in science-related field trips and summer
recreational activities.
Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are areas
in which women are traditionally not evident.
Yet, how do we develop or increase the usability of current
products without understanding the needs of those who use
them? If you are not a math or science person now, come and
see how useful these skills are in creating the world you
want to live in.
Sign up now to unlock your potential as an inventor! All
participants will have the opportunity to strengthen their
leadership and organizational skills, earn recognitions and
receive a participatory patch and T-shirt. Girls will need
to bring a lunch each day, but snacks and beverage will be
provided. There will be periodic field trips; transportation
will be provided to and from Waubonsee Community College.
The camp will culminate in a participant-planned event for
parents and/or the community highlighting the achievements
of the program participants. Opportunity Funds are available
to help with a percentage of the cost of attending the Design
and Discovery Summer Institute. Please complete the Opportunity
Fund form found in this brochure and attach it to the Registration
Form. All applicants will be notified of their acceptance
on or before May 31, 2004. Girls accepted in the program will
receive a confirmation packet with further details, Health
History form and other paperwork to be completed before the
start of the program.
