Q: (Initially posted May 7, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER KATIE W. IN NJ
What professional engineering associations are valuable to female engineers?

May 10, 2004
A: FROM MENTOR DEBORAH GRUBBE IN DE
ALL professional societies are valuable to a female engineer! However,
early in one's career, it is important to join 3 societies: the Society
of Women Engineers
, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and the
engineering society that is most closely aligned with your specific
engineering discipline. Why? Well, SWE helps you understand the
challenges that women in engineering face. NSPE helps you understand how
to become licensed and why an engineering license is important, and lastly,
your discipline society affects your understanding the issues and new areas
in your discipline.

A: FROM MENTOR MOLLY WILLIAMS IN MI
There are two broad types of organizations those that focus on a
specific branch of science or engineering, and those that focus on a
particular group of people.
In the first category are American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American
Society of Civil Engineers, and similar organizations for other branches of
engineering and the sciences. Membership in one of these organizations is
very important to anyone in that discipline, because it will keep you up to
date on latest developments in your own field.
In the second category are Society of Women Engineers, Association for Women
in Science, and similar organizations that focus on Black or Hispanic
engineers and scientists. These organizations provide valuable support for
members of under-represented groups so that they can share their
experiences, develop their careers, and balance the demands of work and
family.
