Q: (Initially posted June 1, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER JANIS L. IN IL
Which engineering field is the most lucrative? I'm looking for an engineering field that uses creativity, but also pays well. Are graphic design skills utilized in engineering? If so, how could I apply graphical design to engineering?

A: FROM MENTOR JOANNA MELDRUM IN CA
Most engineering fields use some creativity - whether it is designing a
bridge or motor, trying to solve a complex problem or presenting a technical
solution to non-scientific clients. One area that is truly creative is
product design. Companies like IDEO (www.ideo.com) help big and small
companies develop and test new and exciting products. To get into product
design, most people have a mechanical engineering degree but many have
electrical or biomedical backgrounds as well. No idea if it is the most
lucrative though. Hope this helps!

Janis,
Unfortunately, the highest paying engineering jobs don't always tap that creative side. Most of the high paying jobs deal in the oil, gas, and power industries. Biggest salaries are the petroleum and nuclear engineers.

So, it sounds like you need to pursue something like Computer Software engineer where you can develop and use graphics packages.
