July Question-of-the-month:
What planet is the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft exploring?
A: Saturn and also Saturn's largest moon, Titan.
Bonus Question: In your opinion is it important to study our solar system?
Why or why not?

See answers from student members below.
(Answers are listed alphabetically by FIRST NAME.)
A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER AGNES K. IN CA
-The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft is a spacecraft that is touring of the
(saturn) ringed planet, its mysterious moons, the stunning rings, and its
complex magnetic environment.
- I think it is important for us to study our solar system because we should
all have at least a little clue about the solar system. Learning about the
solar system enables us to understand how important the solar system is for
us. Not many people know that because of the solar system, earth is
habitable.

Cassini-Huygens is in the house! On Saturn and taking in the sights. Has
everyone looked this up in the NASA site and seen the intense clarity of the
rings and planet lines? I have a reaction like what scientists must have had
so long ago when they looked through microscopes and were able to examine
cells for the first time. This is stunning enough to take my words away. If
there was a McDonald's already on the planet, I think the photo equipment is
sophisticated enough to have spotted it. It turns out fast food chains don't
exist everywhere yet.

I just returned from the Virgin Islands. I worked with scientists doing
coral reef fish and termite research through the Earthwatch Student
Challenge program (everybody look this up and apply for next summer -
incredible to do and a great chance to see if you like field research {I
do}). The termite research already has applications figured out but the fish
parasite research doesn't yet have an application. One scientist was able to
say how the research applies to other issues and problems and the other
claimed that sometimes research is important to do just because we can. I
said I thought research without application had to be looked at as a
"Post-It Note glue dynamic", (the glue was accidentally discovered but
because it didn't permanently stick things together it was at first looked
at as useless) my term for when you discover something and it has no obvious
application but eventually an application develops and then everyone is
satisfied that the effort and money spent was worth it. It was curious to me
that the scientist I told this to disagreed and said research just to
research is a goal in itself. Well. I don't know about that.

Space exploration has parts of it that seem to have obvious and immediate
application to other things. Some of it is either research for the sake of
research or is the stuff of future Post-It note-like importance. The first
is good enough to make sense of all the money needed to accomplish the
research. The second is maybe even impossible to justify. I don't know, I am
still trying to figure out how much we should spend on people doing
dangerous exploration vs using robotics to perform the research. My hope is
that space exploration is always Post-It Note glue at least. My biggest
issue is that I am Earth focused. Since this stuff is so expensive and we
can't do everything, I would prefer more money was spent on our oceans and
land and less on space. My mom told me that when she was little there was a
race between the Soviet Union and the United States to see who could get to
the moon (ours) first and that a huge industry developed as a result. She
said, can you imagine how different things would have been if the USSR and
the US were having a race to be the first to explore the entire ocean? Isn't
that interesting? We might have ended up a huge NOAA (National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration) and a smaller NASA. I think that as long as
money is used for science and tech I am just fine about it, but I wish we
were doing more with our Earth.

Cassini Huygens spacecraft is exploring planet Saturn.
Yes, it is really important to know about our solar system because we should know that there are other worlds around us, some are bigger than earth, and some are smaller than earth. Earth is the only planet to have living creatures, and it's the only planet with oxygen. All planet's except earth have no gravity. We should know all these things about our solar system.

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER CHI H. IN MO
Cassini-huygens spacecraft is exploring on the planet Saturn. It is important
to study our solar system because we can learn other things beyond here on
Earth. There are many things out in the solar system that are yet to be found
or learn more. Our solar system is always changing and when studying we can
learn why. Plus, it is also important for astrologers and for NASA. For them,
they learn how it work and detect things like meteoroids or anything that is a
phenomenon to report back to Earth. It is truly amazing to study our solar
system.

The Cassini-Huygens is exploring Saturn (and also Saturn's largest moon, Titan).
In my opinion, it is important to study our solar system to look out for things that might interrupt our current life on Earth. There might be living beings or things out in other planets that might be helpful to our lives as well as things that might be harmful to our lives. We have to investigate the harmful products to the Earth.

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER CORINNE C. IN CA
Currently, the spacecraft Cassini-Huygens is exploring
the 6th planet in our solar system: Saturn, especially
it's moons and rings. I think it is important to study
our solar system because it makes us more aware of
what's out there. It helps us discover our place in
the universe and what to expect that can effect us
(ex. a comet about to hit earth). It is also useful to
learn about our own history, by comparing the
particles found on other planets (such as Mars and
their life form).

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER ERIKA G. IN CA
The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft is explorin Saturn. in my opinion I think that it is important to study our solar system, because is a way to understand how the universe was created and also be able to know if the other planets are able to sustain life as the earth does.

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER EUNICE N. IN NJ
The Cassini-Huygens aircraft is exploring Saturn. I think that it is important to explore the solar system, but we should protect and explore our planet first. There is no use exploring other solar system if our planet is deteriorating and dying. However, we can gain more knowledge of the earth by exploring our solar system. So we should concentrate on earth and other planets to improve our lives.

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER FRANCISCA L. IN CA
The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft is exploring the planet Saturn and it will also explore its biggest moon Titan. I think that its important to study our solar system because its interesting and we could learn so much from other enviroments. We might someday be able to live in other planets or travel through space just to see whats out there.
********************
A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER HOLLY Y. IN CA
The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft is exploring Saturn. Yes, I think that it is important to study our solar system so that we are aware that there are other forms of planets out in the universe other than our home planet, Earth. Gaining a thorough understanding of our solar system can inspire deeper studies and therefore, someday, we may be able to use the things we discover in other planets. By studying the solar system, we can also prevent destructive comets from destroying Earth or other disastrous happenings. Even though we may not be able to deal with such happenings, by knowing the solar system and the elements of it, we may at least become aware of the problems and try to seek a solution to them.

Cassini-Huygens spacecraft is exploring saturn
It is extremely important to study our solar system since the information about the solar system and the role of earth in the solar system will allow us to grasp a better undestanding of earth itself. Moreover, the possiblity of outer-earth settlements and new fuels and resources is one other hopeful thing to look forward to.

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER IVY H. IN WA
The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft exploring Saturn. I think that it is
very important to study our solar system because we should find out as much
as we can about the world around us. Having knowledge about the solar system
can allow humans to further develop technology and open up new doors for us.

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER JAE Y. IN CA
The answer is Saturn. I think it is important to study our solar system
because we get to learn more about other planets besides Earth. Through
Exploring other planets, we get more knowledge.

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER JANE L. IN IL
Cassini-Huygens spacecraft is exploring Saturn. In my opinion, I think it is
important to study the solar system for many reasons. Don't you think it is
important to know why seasons occur, why we can't live on other planets, why
there are global warmings, why there are 365 days in a year in our planet, and
what is really out there in the solar system for good knowledge.

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER JENNIFER I. IN CA
Cassini-Huygens spacecraft is exploring Saturn (and its moon, Titan)
I believe that it is important to study the solar system because we are part
of the solar system, and knowing more about the solar system will yield us
more information about the Earth. It may also tell us what to expect in the
future. Additionally, it is interesting!

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER JENNIFER K. IN NJ
The Cassini-Huygens is exploring Saturn. I think it is important to study
our solar system to further our knowledge of the universe and see if there
are any alternate resources we could use. However, we should also keep in
mind that we don't even know our own planet all the way through.

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER JENNIFER W. IN FL
The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft is exploring Saturn. Yes, to me it is important to study our solar system because we can learn how our planet is affected by other planets and how earth relates to the other planets; here are some reason.

1st reason: We can learn if the weather on earth is affected by the Sun or the rotation of the Earth, or other planets.

2nd reason: We need to know our solar system because we send communication satellites up in space; therefore the solar system affects our technological advances.

3rd reason: Man is naturally curious about what is around him and it is good for us to learn about the solar system.

4th reason: We need to know about the bodies of the solar system and how these bodies correspond and affect the Earth itself and life on earth.

I also believe there should be a limit to exploring space. We cannot start to commercialize it, and while the Space Station is good for experiments and other scientific discoveries, I do not think we need to build a "space stay" for people to live in space. We need to evaluate how much money we spend on space exploration and figure out if it is worth billions of dollars, because that money can be put to good use down here on Earth in America and all around the world.

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER JESSICA K. IN NJ
Cassini-Huygens spacecraft is exploring Saturn. I think it's very important to study the solar system; because there may be new things we can discover on other planets that can help scientist find new ways to solve problems we have on earth. There could I also believe that knowing the world around us is important. I am also very interested in knowing new theories on how our universe came about. So the study of other planets might help us find clues to the origin of our universe. We will also be able to predict what the future of our planet earth may be.

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER KATHRYN T. IN VA
The Cassini Huygens spacecraft is exploring Saturn. This mission has been seven years in arriving at its destination. Exploring space is extremely important since it may help us to learn more about our world. It can possibly help us with history, science, food possibilities, ecology, environmental preservation. The more we learn about our universe, the more we learn about ourselves and how we can secure and improve our own world.

A: FROM STUDENT MEMBER SALLY K. IN CA
The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft is exploring Saturn. In my opinion it is important to study our solar system because we can gain more knowledge about our solar system and find out if any planet can provide any means of subsistence to start a new life when Earth finally meets its end from global warming, pollution, etc.
