Q: Initially posted October 16, 2004 FROM STUDENT MEMBER JANIS L. IN IL
For my high school Women In Math and Science Club, I was wondering what would be some good ideas to keep the club going? Currently the meetings are boring, and all we do is talk about the events that we would do. The club is only 3 years old and is progressing, but we still need a lot of improvements. If anyone could share some good ideas to make the club more fun, that would be awesome! I have asked the members what to do, but I know many of them are bored out of their minds. Any ideas?

Regarding your Math and Science Club - I have two suggestions:

Try to get some speakers to come and talk about what they do. A local college might have suggestions on how to find these people. Or get a professor to come and talk about Summer programs that are available.

Another suggestion is to take a tour of local industry to get a feel for research or eng requirements, or even Quality issues. Contact the business's Human Resources person.

Field trips are really fun for clubs. Ask each student to identify a potential field(s) that interest her; then have her research a company in your area that employs people in that field. Call the company and ask if your club can have a field trip to talk to several women in this field for one hour.

There are probably many ways to rejuvenate a club such as this. One way
would be to work with the guidance counselor to see if they have ideas
that have worked for other clubs in your school. another is to check
with other schools that have strong clubs such as this and find out what
they are doing. A third idea is to have the members each pick a topic
to research and present at a future meeting so everyone learns about key
topics of interest - you could pick the topics being debated by
candidates at either national or local levels, or pick your own of
interest, even on a global scale. A fourth idea is to find a way to
link your interests to those of women who are both older and younger -
for younger women, can you sponsor a hands-on activity for either a
middle school or a girl scout troop? For networking with more senior
women, as someone in a college or a women in a career (or a man for that
matter) that is of interest and have them come and speak. You could try
a panel session as well among multiple speakers on a single topic. A
fifth idea might be a field trip to a local science center to explore
and learn about what is going on in the world. A sixth idea, that maybe
should be first, is to ask your members and also non-members, what would
be more interesting to them and how would they like to spend their
time. Good luck!
