A: FROM MENTOR ANNE LUCIETTO
IN IL
Greetings,
I'd appreciate it if you would take a minute to learn more
about this
opportunity your local ASM Chapter is sponsoring.
This weeklong, summer camp utilizes hands-on learning principles
of applied
math, physics, and chemistry to introduce students to Materials
Science
Engineering. The student teams are assigned a real world failure
analysis
problem (e.g. cracked connecting bolt) and will work in the
lab of a local
business under the direction of a "Materials Mentor".
Their focus is to
determine the cause of the failure, propose a solution and
present their
findings to the Materials community.
The camp runs July 11-16, 2005. The students receive FREE
meals, tuition,
entertainment and knowledge. Their only responsibility is
to provide their
own transportation and arrive ready to have fun.
Deadline Extended
We have extended the deadline for area students to sign up
for Materials
Camp to May 15. As a relatively new program in the Chicago
area, we have yet
to fill our camp to capacity. Currently there are still 15
slots available
for students entering their Junior or Senior year of high
school in Fall
2005.
Please share this information with any students, teachers
or colleagues you
think might be interested. We want everyone to know about
this opportunity.
Application forms can be found on the chapter's web site.
For more information, please visit www.asmchicago.org or contact
me at
jan.edwards@wiresaway.com.
Late applications will be accepted if slots are available.
Sincerely,
Jan Edwards
Chicago Camp Coordinator
