Q: (Initially posted 11/20/05) FROM STUDENT MEMBER EMILY M.
I was recently invited to attend the 2006 National Youth Leadership Forum
on Medicine, but I'm having trouble coming up with the funds needed. I
have to raise $2,184 plus the cost of getting there.
I live in a small community where local businesses get hit up to
sponsor all types of things and can't afford to contribute that much. Do
you know of any organizations or foundations that I could receive funding
from? Do you have any other suggestions on how to raise the money or on
how to get a scholarship or grant?

A: FROM MENTOR KRISTIN TAGHON in IL

Emily,

First of all - congratulations!! What an honor! Please persevere and
make it happen! 2184 dollars sounds like alot, but I KNOW that you can
do it!

I have a couple ideas, but they aren't definite for you.

Do you know anyone in Medicine? I suggest you ask them how they would
do it. They may have scholarships or money that would go towards helping
young women meet their goals for careers in medicine.

If you are old enough, you should get a job and that will help you put
some of that money toward your goal.

Have you done an internet search on fund-raising? You might get alot
of ideas on how to raise money for your event. I just did a search from
www.google.com and entered
"National Youth Leadership Forum Medicine" and saw alot of returns!!
Here is one on Success Stories on raising money for that forum!!

Here's a fundraising guide:

After reading the guide, I thought of one that I Know my mother would
support. My mother lives in a city where you have to take your
recyclables to a recycling center. She is 84 and she saves all her
cans and bottles and newspapers to take. I think she would welcome someone
to come and take it for her!! You could charge 5 dollars to pick up
someone's recyclables every month and take to a recycling center! If
you found 10 people per week, you would raise a lot of money in a month!
You could raise 200 a month and it wouldn't take much time if you told each
person to leave their recyclables by their door. Check out the other
ideas in the guide and on the website.

I also found a link on GEMSET from 2003
with a bunch of ideas.
