Questions for mentors:
********************
Q: (Initially posted April 26, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER SOOJI L. IN NY
Hello, I recently conducted a research experiment to examine if aquatic plants can help
remove nitrate and neutralize pH (acidity) of water from a river source. I
tested the Elodea and the Cabomba (aquatic plants). Both plants had the ability
to remove nitrates and neutralize pH, but is always removing nitrates and
neutralizing pH a good, advantageous thing in the outside world? What is the effect
on living organisms (plants, etc)? I also need help on understanding what
eutrophication is, as well as oxygen-demanding wastes. Thank you very much!
********************
Q: (Initially posted April 22, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER ANGELICA D. IN CA
What are the highest paying careers in the area of technology?
Are there more opportunities for a technology career in the Navy or Air Force rather than in a college?
********************
Q&A FORUM WITH RESPONSES
********************
Q: (Initially posted April 28, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER JUNGMIN P. IN CA
One of my friends is interested in [careers with] 'semiconductor' technology and is going to study semiconductors in college.
I'm a bit interested too, but not really sure about majors I should take for this field.
What do they study or research? What kind of science or math classes do I have to take?
What kind of professions or jobs are available with a semiconductor technology background?
A: http://www.uic.edu/orgs/gem-set/archive040430q1.htm

Q: (Initially posted April 28, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER AMANDA IN NJ
Do any of your companies utilize a team performance model? If so, could you write in to GEM-SET about it? We have realized, in our Women In Engineering class, how important developing a good team and sustaining a good team over time is. [What tips do mentors have on building an efficient and effective team model?]

I am going to the Virgin Islands this summer through the
Earthwatch program to help with termite and coral reef fish research (I
don't know yet which one I will be assigned to; maybe both). This is going
to be incredible! I will work with two scientists and will get to learn
about real field research. Since I'm considering being a field researcher, I
believe this trip will be highly beneficial. Before I leave, I want to learn
more about termites and reef fish. I would like to spend some time learning
basic stuff about these creatures. Can anybody tell me where to find info
that's not too scientifically worded or verbose that will help me get
started? General searching on the web hasn't been helping much, so I'm kind
of at a loss. Thanks!

Q: (Initially posted April 16, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER ALEXIS K. IN VA
I learned in driver's education that if a head-on collision occurs, the car that is
going faster causes the other car to bounce backwards. If the cars were
going the same speed, their kinetic energies would cancel out when they
crash into each other. Here's what I would like to know: If a head-on
between two cars is inevitable, where one car is going faster, let's say 60
mph, and the other is going slower, 40 mph, would it better for the slower
car to accelerate a little bit to meet the other car's force or to brake
(This is assuming the faster car neither brakes nor speeds up)? The reason I
ask this is because I wonder if it would be better to help cancel out the
momentum rather than take on the entirety of the force. When I envision the
situation in my mind, it seems like braking would be worse, because then the
momentum of the slower car disappears and it's as if it no longer has any
defense against the force that is about to crush it. Either way, the outcome
isn't going to be pretty, but I'm wondering if it's at all possible to
lessen the amount of damage.

Q: (Initially posted April 13, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER JANIS L. IN IL
I am interested in becoming a computer engineer, however, I do not know much about the field. How much should I know, if any, to enter the engineering field before college?

Q: (Initially posted April 13, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER JEN K. IN NJ
I'm a junior in high school thinking about attending a summer program at
CMU, but I'm not sure which one to attend. I want to major in
architecture/engineering in college. I'm trying to decide between the APEA
program in Calculus and Physics for Engineering, which allows me to take the
same courses college students would get, and the architecture program which
would give me an idea of what it would be like to study architecture in a
university. Does anyone have any suggestions over which program I should
choose?

Hello. [How necessary are writing skills to be an orthodontist?]  I want to be an orthodontist... what does writing have

Q: (Initially posted April 12, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER ALEXIS K. IN VA
Dave Barry's article... talks about birds blowing up from eating rice that is thrown at weddings. He said this was a myth. I wonder ...how to research an issue to decide if it is a myth or not?

I have been looking for colleges that have wildlife research. I found one
that was mentioned in a Smithsonian article about ocelots (the Caesar
Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University-Kinsville). I
would like to know what other options there are and could use help to find
the schools.
