August Question-of-the-Month: (Fill in the BLANKS)
Linda Babcock, economics professor at Carnegie Mellon University, found that 57% of graduating men versus only 7% of graduating women negotiated starting salaries, causing a $_____gap per year in pay. Babcock also stated that women who consistently negotiated their salary increases earned at least $_________ more during their careers than women who didn't. After her research finding, Babcock co-wrote a book with Sara Laschever called, Women Don't Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide. According to the book, if more women would initially ask for a higher paycheck, the gender gap in salary would be significantly reduced. The book includes suggestions on how women can ask for more money.
Prize drawing for this book to be held on September 1st. Submit your response to GEM-SET@uic.edu and take a chance. Learn how to be a better negotiator!

Q: (Initially posted August  9, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER LAUREN S. IN CT
I am going to be a sophomore in high school. I know it's early, but I've
already started looking at colleges. I like writing, English, history,
foreign studies, business, and, of course, science and technology. I want a
small college in a rural setting preferably on the east coast area. What
college should I be looking at? And, what sort of classes would combine many
of my interests?

Q: (Initially posted August 16, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER YESEUL IN IL
I'm going to be a junior this fall, and all my life, I've been thinking about what I wanted to become. I found my passions in architecture and biomedical science. I'll need to choose what university I want to go to in next 2 years, and I don't think I should decide on one. I want to be able to experience both architecture and biomedical science and decide. I was wondering what universities in California offered both of them. I also was wondering what education I needed after high school to become an M.D. and a real estate developer.

Hello, I would like to receive help in finding a great place to become an intern. I am currently going to become a sophomore at my high school. I was wondering if there [are any internships available that would expose me to] science or business  near my area, which is the Walnut/Diamond Bar/Rowland Heights/Brea area in California.
If the area is too specific, would there be anywhere near these areas?

Question for Mentors

Q: (Initially posted August 2, 2004) FROM STUDENTS AT THE ASIAN SOCIAL NETWORK IN IL
There is a Japanese beetle infestation in our area.  Do they spread out from where they burrow and wreak havoc?  Or is the chemical lawn treatment guy just trying to scare us into buying his pesticide services?

Q: (Initially posted July 29, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER SYLVIA P. IN CA

Q: (Initially posted July 22, 2204) FROM STUDENT MEMBER DEBORAH K. IN CA
I want to apply for an early decision for a certain University on the East Coast because they surely have a higher acceptance rate for early decision makers. However, I still have to retake my SAT's to get better scores. Is it true that for early decisions, I can not send in my new scores for sat tests that I will be taking next fall? or can I still turn in better sat scores after I turn in the application? [Do mentors have any suggestions about the pro's and con's of early decision applications?] thank you for your help!
