NEW QUESTIONS FOR MENTORS
********************
Q: (Initially posted February 22, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER AYUSHI R. IN TX
Hi, in the future I want to be a Heart Surgeon. Right now I am in 10th grade, and I am planning to take medical terminology in my junior year. Do you think it will help me in the future if I take that class???[What other benefits might I receive from a medical terminology class]?
********************
Q: (Initially posted February 22, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER YESEUL IN IL
What great culinary schools are out there ? Where are
they ? Are there any culinary workshop places I can
attend and experience what it is like without having
to pay hundreds of dollars to attend a class?

Q: (Initially posted February 15, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER ARYANA IN MA

Q: (Initially posted February 15, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER SYLVIA P. IN CA
Hello,
I was wondering about 3 things:
1) I am going to become a Junior next school year and
I was wondering if any mentor knew of any research
based "internship" (i.e. bioengineering etc...) that I
can pursue. In my Junior year summer (next summer), it
is mandatory for the Troy Tech students to find an
internship. Therefore, i was thinking that it may be
better to "volunteer" before the mandatory internship
rolls along. So, do any mentors know of any professors
or research-based facility (in the Orange County area)
that I could possibly intern in for this summer and
next?
I am also interested in business. Currently, I am
debating whether I should set my major toward the
medical field or the business field. Business can also
be an alternative internship I could pursue. Therefore,
if any mentors knew of any fairly big company that
allows high school students to intern in, could you
please post some contact information?
2) On average, how much do women dieticians,
nutritionists, and other related occupations make
per year?
3) I am doing a research paper on the correlation between
the fast food industry’s constant encouragements
toward children (through advertisements involving
characters and others that children are fond of) to
consume their foods, and the dramatic, exponential
growth of obese and overweight children in America.
I would like to receive some feedback from some of the
mentors, because primary sources are a necessity for
my paper. Could the mentors give me an input to your
opinions/facts that you may be aware of on this topic.
With the opinion/facts, could you leave me some basic
information about yourself (i.e. Doe, John. Registered
nutritionist, ___ hospital, etc etc)
Also, it would be great if mentors could possibly give
me some contact information (phone numbers, email,
etc) on people who are specialists in this area (i.e.
nutritionist, dietician, pediatrician, marketing
specialist, etc).
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Q: (Initially posted February 15, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBERS at the HIGH POINT REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN NJ

We are students in Mr. Wallace’s Women in Engineering course at High Point
Regional High School, in Sussex, New Jersey. We are interested in the field
of biotechnology and have entered a high school competition. We must
interview a person in the field of biotechnology. We know this is a very
broad field but to satisfy this portion of the Technology Student
Association competitive events, we would like to ask you some questions.
We can do this over the phone or via email.[Note to mentors: If you are willing to be interviewed over the phone, please send contact phone # and good times to call to GEM-SET@uic.edu or respond via e-mail to questions below.]
1. Can you tell be about your company and how it may deal with
biotechnology?
2. What is a Clinical Development Coordinator?
3. What would a Clinical Development Coordinator do for your company?
4. What higher education is required for a Clinical Development Coordinator?
5. What types of degrees would one get to become a Clinical Development
coordinator for your company?
6. What areas of Biotechnology do you deal with?
7. What do you know about Cell Therapy?
8. What do you know about blood bank technology?
9. What kind of work does a Clinical Development Coordinator do for your
company?

Q: (Initially posted February 5, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER KUNJAL P. IN NY
I am really very interested in the recent exploration of the moon Titan. Can anyone tell me anything about it? I know that they are looking for carbon and proteins, and that means that there may be life on the planet, but I was wondering if they have found anything so far. This topic is really exciting and I hope that we do find something, it would be a great field to explore!

Q: (Initially posted January 19, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER BRITTANY C. IN NJ
In my Women in Engineering Class we are building bridges. I was curious whether a substructure generally increases strength along with a superstructure, or just one or the other would be better for strength. Thank you.

Hello mentors. I am looking for a summer program related to science and technology, and I have found a couple, the Welch's summer science program and the SSP (summer science program). The Welch's SSP is offered at the Texas Universities, and my teacher recommended that to me. The SSP is offered at either California or New Mexico. I'm debating with myself on which one to apply to. I think neither one is easy to get in , though. so... if anybody knows if these programs are worth going for and prestigious, please leave a response! Thank you!

Q: (Initially posted January 19, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER JOSIE K. IN GA
I am currently a Junior, with a heavy course load, and an out-of-school
paying internship, no time, and am in serious need of help. As most
mentors know, knowing how to study is crucial for survival in the
final years of high school, as well as college. And I've survived so
far on sheer luck on my side, but my luck is sliding, and I
desperately need some pointers on how to study, what kind of studying
is most effective, how to study for physics(ahh!!), and so on and so
forth. I'm not sure what kind of information may be useful to the
mentors, so .. My classes include: AP US Hist, AP Physics B, AP
Language, Gftd. PreCal, and I usually review the notes given each day.
Any advice is appreciated!! Thank you in advance!!!

Q: (Initially posted January 19, 2005) FROM SENIOR STUDENT AT VERNON HIGH SCHOOL
First of all, I must say that the presentation at Vernon Twp. H.S on Engineering was great. It help me so much. I use to think I wanted to go to William Paterson for nursing, but I went to NJIT, and I realized I had an interest in Biomedical Engineering. I got accepted to William Paterson, and it said it had a Biomedical field. I'm not sure if I should go to that school, or should I try to apply to a school with that specific field. Although I like biomedical [careers], I'm not sure if I can actually do it. Therefore I wouldn't want to go to an Engineering school. But I definitely know I want to do something with nursing or the medical field. What do you think I should do?

I have applied to Rochester Institute of Technology in
hope of pursuing Advertising and Public Relations. I
am wondering if there are any GEM-SET mentors who are
involved with these fields in any kind of way with
technology or media or whatnot? I would like to know
how you became interested and how it led you to where
you are today. And whether you have any suggestions of
where I could seek for a summer job and part-time job
during my last semester of high school this year that
may have anything to do with what I'm interested in?
