January Question-of-the-month:
In early January a NASA spacecraft successfully landed on a planet. Can you name the spacecraft and the planet?
Bonus point: How long did it take for the spacecraft to travel from Cape Canaveral, FL to the planet?
*********************
Questions for Mentors:
*********************
Q: (Initially posted January 30, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER KELLY B. IN PA
How are scientists expecting to build a space elevator? How will it
actually work and how long will it take to build?
********************
Q: (Initially posted January 29, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER BIANCA B. IN RI
I was wondering what are some of the modern science career fields in today's world?
*******************
Q: (Initially posted January 29, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER RENEE P. IN CO
I'm in a program called Destination Imagination. We must build a structure as part of our problem. I have a few questions about building designs. Which simple shapes and designs would support the most weight? Which beams (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal) provide the most support? Where would be the best place to put support beams or other devices? Any other building tips would be helpful. Thanks!!!
********************
Q&A
********************
Q: (Initially posted January 27, 2003) FROM STUDENT MEMBER ALEXIS K. IN VA
Two new questions...
What does UT mean in the context of NASA? It was referenced in information
about the Mars Rover Spirit. Does it mean universal time?
also,
I recently heard that at one time the US had the most wind turbines
(renewable source of energy), but now the Netherlands has the most. I have
been hearing a lot about arctic winds coming down from New York (haven't we
all heard about them!) and heard that the winds coming through Oswego, New
York are enough to knock you over (sounds like the Netherlands). Does the US
have wind turbines in the northern high wind areas?

Chemical Engineering. I Live in Denver,Colorado and the Mines seems to be one of

I have some questions regarding genetic engineering.
What kind of vocations are offered in the genetic engineering area?
Also, gene therapy seems to be a really good thing but there are some bad aspects to it. Besides that therapy is only temporary, costs a lot, and has had some major side effects for its test subjects, is there anything else that's bad about gene therapy?

Q: (Initially posted January 22, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER ROBIN B. IN CA
I am part of a program called the Engineering Academy at my school. This
means that I take specific classes each year (classes that i would not be
able to take otherwise), such as descriptive geometry, 3D computer modeling,
and architecture. Next year (senior year) the required classes are
architecture and 2nd-year physics mechanics, neither of which interests me
much (especially the physics). For my senior year, I am willing to work
hard, but i want to be interested and involved in what i am doing. I also
feel like I am ready to move on from high school to the real world. Because
of my school and its location, i am able to take certain classes at
community colleges in the area and (probably, it might take a lot of work or
hassle to get in to the program) and undergrad classes at UC Berkeley. There
are also many interesting internships and/or jobs that i might be able to
obtain as a senior. Doing either of these things would mean keeping involved
and interested and enthusiastic about what i am doing, but would also mean giving up at least some of my Engineering classes (as well as my calculus
class, which i really enjoy). I'm not sure which direction i should go:
doing (very) challenging, interesting, more unusual things by myself or
sticking with a known good program even though i don't enjoy it as much and
will learn different things from it. Any suggestions?

Q: (Initially posted January 22, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER JOSIE K. IN GA
What is going to be different about the new SAT, and who exactly will have
to take it? Will it be harder and more challenging, or more objective,
because I have heard so many rumors, but I never know what to believe. Also,
will the scoring be different because they added an essay section?? How long
will the essays have to be? Will it be harder to prepare for this SAT?..

I have recently started going to a SAT prep school, out side of public
school, and its very helpful, but it seems to be all things that i could do
on my own time, without a tutor, for instance, we go over many, many
vocabulary words, and we review Algebra one and Geometry, and a little
Algebra Two. I was just wondering if there might be a cheaper way to study
sufficiently for the SAT, but still save a lot of money ( the prep school is
very costly).
--PS. if I should choose one to get me ready for college, should I choose
Track, which will look really good on my college resumes, or should I choose
SAT prep school, which will really get me ready for the SAT's??. Thanks in
advance again! =]

If a student has all regular classes in high school as a sophomore (no honors, no AP), what should he/she do in her following years as a Junior or Senior for his/her best luck at [getting into] a UC school?

Hi, I was just wondering if I could get a head start in thinking about college. In order to get into a good college (ex. Caltech, Stanford, Pomona College, etc.), I heard that they look at more than just SAT scores and grades...
I'm a Freshman and I wanted to know what kinds of clubs I should join and what I can do to start aiming for the colleges of my choice.
Also, in your opinion, is the school's orchestra going to be more appealing or a school sport?
I would really appreciate an answer
Thank you!

Today in Chemistry class, we discussed hemoglobin and the reasons that blood
is red because of the iron in it. One of the students mentioned a deep sea
creature with green blood because it has copper in place of the iron. Is this a
fact, and how does this blood differ in any other ways?

Q: (Initially posted January 12, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER SANNA R. IN VA
Today in Chemistry class, we discussed hemoglobin and the reasons that blood
is red because of the iron in it. One of the students mentioned a deep sea
creature with green blood because it has copper in place of the iron. Is this a
fact, and how does this blood differ in any other ways?
Thanks!

Hello,
This is my first time messaging, so here goes:
I want my major in college to be bioengineering. I know bioengineering
combines biology and engineering, and I like biology and math. But I have some
questions about it:
1) Is it easy to obtain a job? What kind of job? A job in a laboratory?
2) What are the prerequisites to obtaining a job related to bioengineering?
a PhD? creativity? sleight in hand?
3) What are some good schools that are famous for bioengineering? Famous
professors?
Any Nobel prize winners who received the award due to success in
bioengineering?
4) I'm in 10th grade right know, and I want to start preparing for my major.
Are biology and math the only subjects that I need to excel in [at this point]?
5) What courses do I need to take in college for a major in biochemistry?
6) My school offers Computer Science. Should I take it to benefit my future
major?
Thank you so much in advance! I had these questions for a long time, but I
had no one to ask them to. But now I finally do!

In order to get into the National Honors Society at my school, you have to
have been in several leadership roles. A few of my friends missed getting
accepted into the NHS because of their lack of prior leadership roles. I
was wondering, where do you think I could get experience doing things [that will give me leadership role experience]? Thanks!
