Q: (Initially posted July 29, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER SYLVIA
P. IN CA
Hello, I would like to receive help in finding a great place
to become an intern. I am currently going to become a sophomore
at my high school. I was wondering if there [are any internships
available that would expose me to] science or business
near my area, which is the Walnut/Diamond Bar/Rowland Heights/Brea
area in California.
If the area is too specific, would there be anywhere near
these areas?

I want to apply for an early decision for a certain University
on the East Coast because they surely have a higher acceptance
rate for early decision makers. However, I still have to retake
my SAT's to get better scores. Is it true that for early decisions,
I can not send in my new scores for sat tests that I will
be taking next fall? or can I still turn in better sat scores
after I turn in the application? [Do mentors have any suggestions
about the pro's and con's of early decision applications?]
thank you for your help!

Hi, I want to major in Pharmacy, but am having trouble deciding
on a university. Can you please tell me about the University
of Texas at Austin and the University of Houston at Downtown?
How can I tell which is the better program for me? [Also some
high schools have credits for Pharmacy Tech programs. I do
not know if my high school has this program. Has anyone gotten
Pharmacy Tech credit before college? Is this a good idea to
pursue?]Thank you very much for helping me out !!!

This is my first year taking Advanced Placement courses. Can
any one give me any idea what it is going to be like? I have
heard from other people that it will be really hard... research
papers everyday, and stuff like that. I feel like they are
just scaring me. So, I want to hear from the mentors and other
students who have taken AP courses at different schools.

Q: (Initially posted July 23, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER ALEXIS

I do well with classes, tests and grades. I do best in history,
writing,
art, and computer graphics but really like science. Math is
the least
natural for me but my teachers have said I can handle it fine.
I have to
work harder in math, less hard in science, and not at all
with humanities.
Well, let me say that differently, I work hard in everything
but some
subjects don't seem like work as much (history for example).
If I am going
to be a scientist or computer scientist, I am going to have
to work harder
and I might not get as high grades as I would like. Why would
I take the
risk to go into science when I could do better in the humanities?
I might be wrong, but if I go to college to do science and
math, I might not have
grades as good or better than going into humanities. I am
questioning if I
want to risk doing the harder thing, getting lower grades,
then having
opportunities close up. This is a very important question
because I don't
think I am the only girl who wonders about this.

I am interested in aeronautical engineering and am planning
to study that in
college and later work at NASA, hopefully in Mission Control.
I was wondering
what I should be doing now, as a high school junior, to help
jump start my
career? I am taking classes related to aeronautics, but is
there any internships
or other opportunities for me?

I am going to move and will go to another high school for
my Junior and
Senior year. I worked really hard in my old school and people
knew me. I
will go into a new school where no one knows me. I will come
in too late to
run for school office and be able to take other leadership
responsibilities.
I already have plans to create programs on my own, but how
do I break into a
new school half way through high school? I won't have a lot
of the AP
classes I would have had if I didn't have to move and it will
be too late
for me to start IB (if they have it and I don't think they
do). I'm not
sure, but I think I am going from an extremely hard school
to an easier one
with a lot less to offer for classes. Isn't this going to
really mess up
college applications and plans? What can I do to avoid problems
or recover
from ones that happen because of the change? How do colleges
look at things
if you have to change schools? Do they care or understand
how hard this
makes things?

I was wondering when in high school is it a good time to begin
to tour and
visit colleges? I have no idea where I want to go for college,
and I'm not
sure how to get started looking at the different colleges
or where to even
begin to find the college best for me.

I have decided biology as my major for a long period of time,
and I am planning to choose that major when I write for my
college applications. I want to know how the colleges choose
the students based on their choices of majors. For example,
for students applying for colleges under interest of biology
major, do colleges pay attention to the grades that students
have received in bio-related courses more, or still overall
transcript (extracurricular activities). I just want to have
the knowledge of college admission process based on students'
choice of their major especially regarding biology major.

JUNE QUESTION-of-the-MONTH SUMMARY
Thanks to all the students who responded to the June Question-of-the-Month.
Of the 27 students who responded, the average amount of time
spent on the Internet each week was approximately 11 hours,
with the range being from 1 hour to 30 hours. Many people
commented about how convenient the Internet is, but there
was also commentary on how the Internet should not take over
our lives. There should still be time for friends, exercise,
out-door activities, etc.
Many people sent in definitions on the digital divide. Diana
J. in CA defines it as follows:
"The 'digital divide' is a term commonly used to describe
an individual
or community's lack of access to computers, training and online
resources. It
refers to a gap between those individuals who have reasonable
opportunities
to gain access to technology tools and those that do not.
Digital divides exist
among those of differing income and economic levels, education,
age, and
gender, race or ethnicity, location, single and dual-parent
families, and
disability.
Kathryn T. from VA tells us that
"In my community, our high school students will all be
provided with their own laptops this year so that the gap
can be closed between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots.' "

usage by GEM-SET students click here:

Hi. Thank you to all the mentors who answered my question!
It was quite helpful! That is why I am still looking at both
sides. I have a list of universities that offer the special
7/8 medical program, which allow high school students to immediately
go on to the colleges' medical school after their undergrad
program as long as they take the required courses and maintain
a certain GPA. I recently discovered that the University of
Pacific offers a 7yr. dentistry program, which also ensures
the high school student of a space in their dental school
if they maintain a certain GPA and get a certain score on
the DAT (thanks to all you mentors, I know what this is!!)
Are there any other colleges/universities that offer a 7/8
dentistry program for high school students? I don't really
mind if they are 7 or 8 years. Thank you!!

people. I was just curious why people would bother to make
such things and how do the they spread?
