Q: (Initially posted on March 17, 2003) FROM MENTEE KUNJAL IN NY
In biology class we were talking about AIDS and HIV and how they use special processes to keep the virus from mutating. For example they would have and HIV patient use a certain drug for 3 months then not have them take anything for 2 months, this would cause the virus to reproduce but not mutate and become "immune" to the medicine. I was wondering, if they took blood cells and enhanced them with things like nutrients and/or medicines that could possibly kill or prevent the virus from spreading, would it work? Where would i get information about it?
Also I am really interested in these kinds of things and would like to know if there were any programs (in/near NY and for high schoolers, esp. freshmen) where one could get a hands on experience and work with cells and viruses and things of such nature.

Also I am really interested in these kinds of things and would like to know if there were any programs (in/near NY and for high schoolers, esp. freshmen) where one could get a hands on experience and work with cells and viruses and things of such nature.

filled with black smoke so quickly that if the people weren't out of the

dangerous so quickly? Was it the chemicals used by the band’s display? Was it
something on the walls in the club? Can water put out this type fire and

Q: (Initially posted on March 4, 2003) FROM MENTEE ABI W. IN NY
I have a question about how people see color.
I was wondering if people see a different color as someone
else but were taught that it was a certain color. For example if I see a color and I think it is red because I have been taught it was red, someone
else could see a different color and know it as red too, we both see a
different color but know it as red. The red I see, might be a different red
someone else sees. Is this Possible or does everyone see the exact same color
as everyone else (unless of course they know they're color blind) ?

Q: (Initially posted on March 4, 2003) FROM MENTEE ABI W. IN NY
Last week at my school we hosted a blood drive for the Red Cross. A lot of
11th and 12th graders gave blood and I was wondering how fast your body
replaces the blood that you loose when giving blood. Is it safe to give a
whole pint of blood like you do when donating? One girl in 12th grade was
giving blood and I guess not enough was coming out fast enough so they put a
big mat under her feet to put her feet above her head so the blood would move
to her arm. I was wondering if giving blood was safe for all ages and sizes
of people? Can it ever be dangerous to give blood, if you are a very small
person wouldn't a pint of blood be a lot to take compared to someone who is a
lot bigger?

I know that I want to be in something with computers when I graduate highschool. But I do not understand all the fields of computers that you can go into. Q: (Initially posted on March 3, 2002) FROM MENTEE SHANTEL D. IN IL
We are still shocked at the tragedies that occurred at the nightclubs in Chicago and in Rhode Island. The news said that the club in Rhode Island filled with black smoke so quickly that if the people weren't out of the club within three minutes they were overcome with smoke. What made the club fire so dangerous so quickly? Was it the chemicals used by the band’s display? Was it something on the walls in the club? Can water put out this type fire and eliminate the smoke or does it have to be some other type chemical?

COMMENT: (Initially posted on March 3, 2003) FROM MIA M. IN CA
On February 27, 2003, I attended the Women's Bureau and UCSD GEMSET
Program at UCSD and I would like to thank Kathy Kailikole, Dr. Aprille
Ericsson, and all the UCSD GEMSET mentors for putting on this event. It was
both fun and informative, allowing girls in the GEMSET program from high
schools all over the San Diego area to learn more about SET courses/careers
and basically bond with each other. I highly recommend other Universities to
put on similar events and invite high school GEMSET clubs around their area.
I hope more will be planned for the future. Once again, THANK YOU!!!
