CONGRATULATIONS to Mentor Deborah Grubbe who has accepted
a new position as Vice President-Safety, BP Plc. She will
based in London, England. Deborah will be leaving DuPont where
she is Corporate Director-Safety and Health. She has been
featured in the books "Engineering Your Way to Success"
and "Journeys of Women in Science and Engineering-No
Universal Constants."
Best wishes to Deborah during this exciting career transition!

March Question-of-the-month:
Harvard University's president Lawrence Summers hypothesized
at a conference recently that one reason women are underrepresented
in "high-end scientific professions" is that women
are less likely than men to "want to do high-powered
intense work." Both mentors and student members
are invited to comment on this hypothesis.
To read full remarks go to: http://www.president.harvard.edu/speeches/2005/nber.html
GEM-SET moderators will be forwarding all comments to Dr.
Summers after posting on the GEM-SET digest. See responses

NEW QUESTIONS FOR MENTORS
********************
Q: (Initially posted March 26, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER LAUREN
S. IN CT
When is the predicted "big bang" for our sun? And
when will the sun become a red giant? Will its change harshly
effect our environment?
********************
Q: (Initially posted March 26, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER LAUREN
S. IN CT
I like writing and am pretty good at it. I heard that technical
writers are
in great demand and that it is a great way for me to combine
my love of
science and writing into one career. How does one end up in
a technical
writer job? What sort of career options are included in this
field? Would I
have to take a lot of science courses in college to have this
career or
would just an English degree be enough?
********************
Q: (Initially posted March 26, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER FRANCISCA
L. IN CA
I'm a junior in high school right now and I am part of the
IB program at my school. I want to go full diploma but since
I barely started the program this year my schedule for next
year leaves little room for flexibility because I have to
take certain classes in Higher Level and Standard Level. The
problem is that next year my science class has to be Biology
but since i want to be an engineer I wanted to take Physics
since I know that will help me in college and it will be good
to take the SAT subject test in. I already took physics in
ninth grade but I know that was not the level enough I need
to know. I can take Physics next year but it will twice as
hard since I will have to study on my own during the end of
the school year to take the test for IB and I don't think
I will know enough Physics to take the Sat subject test. Can
someone just give me some advice is it worth it to take Physics
over Economics. How important is taking the Physics subject
test for college? Will it matter?

Q: (Initially posted March 16, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER TAJKIA
IN TX
I'm interested in pursuing a career in the Engineering field,
but I'm not sure about which type of Engineering I'm interested
in yet. Right now, Chemical Engineering seems very interesting.
What type of work does a Chemical Engineer do?
********************
Q: (Initially posted March 16, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER HARRIET
IN MA
I recently read an article about Albert Einstein that said
he was not such a great student and was even expelled. The
article also said he spent 7 years as a technical assistant
in a patent office and produced much of his important work
in his "spare time," not as part of his job. I'm
wondering if any of the mentors ever had trouble in school
or if they ever feel like their jobs do not really tap into
their talents?

Hello! I have a question regarding the role of
international relations in the workplace. I'm curious
to know how much scientists/engineers/researchers
deal with people from other "technological advanced"
nations. If there is a lot of contact between nations
in the world of technology, science, math, and
engineering, with which nation the most? Thank you!

I am currently a junior and I was wondering if any mentors
know of medical (bioengineering, etc) internships around the
South Bay (California) area...Thank you so much in advance!

Q: (Initially posted March 2, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER KUNJAL
P. IN NY
In the past I have been really interested in Forensic Science
and Criminal Justice. On a recent physics field trip I discovered
that I had a strong interest in engineering. Is there anything
that combines Forensic science and engineering. What types
of engineering are out there and what kinds of bio-medical/
chemical engineering breakthroughs have been discovered recently?
My physics teacher says that there is Forensic physics...
what exactly is that? Next year I'm going to be a senior and
I really want to take Criminalistics. What other science should
I take- (AP Chem, AP Physics or Anatomy& Physiology)?
Thanks!

Q: (Initially posted February 15, 2005) FROM STUDENT MEMBER
SYLVIA P. IN CA
Hello,
I was wondering about 3 things:
1) I am going to become a Junior next school year and
I was wondering if any mentor knew of any research
based "internship" (i.e. bioengineering etc...)
that I
can pursue. In my Junior year summer (next summer), it
is mandatory for the Troy Tech students to find an
internship. Therefore, I was thinking that it may be
better to "volunteer" before the mandatory internship
rolls along. So, do any mentors know of any professors
or research-based facility (in the Orange County area)
that I could possibly intern in for this summer and
next?
I am also interested in business. Currently, I am
debating whether I should set my major toward the
medical field or the business field. Business can also
be an alternative internship I could pursue. Therefore,
if any mentors knew of any fairly big company that
allows high school students to intern in, could you
please post some contact information?
2) On average, how much do women dieticians,
nutritionists, and other related occupations make
per year?
3) I am doing a research paper on the correlation between
the fast food industrys constant encouragements
toward children (through advertisements involving
characters and others that children are fond of) to
consume their foods, and the dramatic, exponential
growth of obese and overweight children in America.
I would like to receive some feedback from some of the
mentors, because primary sources are a necessity for
my paper. Could the mentors give me an input to your
opinions/facts that you may be aware of on this topic.
With the opinion/facts, could you leave me some basic
information about yourself (i.e. Doe, John. Registered
nutritionist, ___ hospital, etc etc)
Also, it would be great if mentors could possibly give
me some contact information (phone numbers, email,
etc) on people who are specialists in this area (i.e.
nutritionist, dietician, pediatrician, marketing
specialist, etc).
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

We can do this over the phone or via email.[Note to mentors:
If you are willing to be interviewed over the phone, please
send contact phone # and good times to call to GEM-SET@uic.edu
or respond via e-mail to questions below.]

with
biotechnology?
2. What is a Clinical Development Coordinator?
3. What would a Clinical Development Coordinator do for your
company?
4. What higher education is required for a Clinical Development
Coordinator?
5. What types of degrees would one get to become a Clinical

I am really very interested in the recent exploration of the
moon Titan. Can anyone tell me anything about it? I know that
they are looking for carbon and proteins, and that means that
there may be life on the planet, but I was wondering if they
have found anything so far. This topic is really exciting
and I hope that we do find something, it would be a great
field to explore!

Hi, in the future I want to be a Heart Surgeon. Right now
I am in 10th grade, and I am planning to take medical terminology
in my junior year. Do you think it will help me in the future
if I take that class???[What other benefits might I receive

In my Women in Engineering Class we are building bridges.
I was curious whether a substructure generally increases strength

be better for strength. Thank you.
