GEM-SET MAY QUESTION-OF-THE-MONTH for STUDENTS and MENTORS:
With summer vacation just around the corner, I'm sure many
student members are starting the summer job hunt. Students,
do any of you have summer jobs lined up that involve, science,
engineering or technology? Mentors, what is the best summer
job you ever had? Did it help launch a future career, hobby
or interest? What steps did you take to apply and why do you
think you were hired?

Q: (Initially posted May 28, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER SHARON
S. IN CA I really want to be a surgeon as my profession in
the future. Something about it just fascinates me. The problem
is, people in my life support me wanting to be a medical doctor
but not being a surgeon. Is there something about this profession
that I am not aware about? If there are any mentors who are
surgeons, can you please inform me about what to do in high
school and college and all the schooling you did? Thank you
so much for your help. ********************

If I graduate a year early, with all the credits that I need,
does that
change the outcome of my chances of getting into colleges?
Do you think it will benefit me or hurt my chances of getting
into the best colleges? Also, if a sophomore graduates in
her junior year, do you think that it is necessary to take
the new SAT for the colleges, when they come out?
-- I will be taking about 4 AP classes in my junior year next
year, and 5 my senior year, What kinds of study methods would
you recommend? Thanks all!

I've heard before that if you drink coffee, in a long-term
effect, it can
lower your ability to think or perform. Jokingly, I was told
that if I
drink coffee my brain will retrograde. Is this true?
If this is true, is decaffeinated coffee a better option or
does it also hinder brain activity?

Hello, I recently conducted a research experiment to examine
if aquatic plants can help
remove nitrate and neutralize pH (acidity) of water from a
river source. I
tested the Elodea and the Cabomba (aquatic plants). Both plants
had the ability
to remove nitrates and neutralize pH, but is always removing
nitrates and
neutralizing pH a good, advantageous thing in the outside
world? What is the effect
on living organisms (plants, etc)? I also need help on understanding
what
eutrophication is, as well as oxygen-demanding wastes. Thank
you very much!

What are the highest paying careers in the area of technology?
Are there more opportunities for a technology career in the
