GEM-SET DIGEST FOR November 29, 2005

Question-of-the-Month for November
In response to a recent documentary on the emperor penguins,
there is much
new interest on these cool birds from the Antarctic. The question
for
students is why do you think that penguins have a white belly
and a black
back?
All students who respond on or before December 1st will receive
a copy of
Science News, the weekly news magazine of science.

NEW QUESTIONS FOR MENTORS:
Q: (Initially posted 11/29/05) FROM STUDENT MEMBER SHAHEENAH
C. in NJ
My team is doing a project for a class, and I am stuck on
a question. Our project is taking a product and predicting
what is it going to be like in 20 years. My job on this project
is to find the consequences in 20 years for the Clarity Deskmate.
[Are there any mentors out there working on assistive technology
solutions? Where is this field going in the future?]
********************
Q: (Initially posted 11/20/05) FROM STUDENT MEMBERS JULIE
R. & ASHLEY C.
in NJ
Our women in engineering class is working to create problems
for the
ExploraVision Competition.
(See http://www.exploravision.org/2005/home.htm)
We have been asked to "Identify a problem that a current
technology does not solve, then imagine possible solutions."
[Are there any mentors who can provide guidance on creative
technological solutions that do not currently exist, but could
exist in 20
years? Don't give away too much detail from your specialties'
R&D, but all
ideas are welcome!]

RESPONSES FROM MENTORS

Q: (Initially posted 11/20/05) FROM STUDENT MEMBER EMILY M.
I was recently invited to attend the 2006 National Youth Leadership
Forum
on Medicine, but I'm having trouble coming up with the funds
needed. I
have to raise $2,184 plus the cost of getting there.
I live in a small community where local businesses get hit
up to
sponsor all types of things and can't afford to contribute
that much. Do
you know of any organizations or foundations that I could
receive funding
from? Do you have any other suggestions on how to raise the
money or on
how to get a scholarship or grant?

Q: (Initially posted 10-17-05) FROM STUDENT MEMBER
SAMANTHA R. IN NJ What made you decide that you wanted a career
in
engineering? What got you into it?
