NEW QUESTIONS FOR MENTORS
********************
Q: Initially posted October 28, 2004 FROM STUDENT MEMBER CLAIRE
W. IN MN
Hi,
I'm a senior in high school trying to decide where I should
go to
college. Many people have given me the pitch about a liberal
arts
education being invaluable, but I wonder how will it benefit
me as an
engineer? My college dilemma is between three schools: Smith
College,
Carnegie Mellon University, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Obviously, CMU has an excellent reputation in engineering,
and RHIT is
top ranked among schools not offering PhD's. Smith has a new
engineering
program, and I really like the school, but question if I will
be able to
get a good job in engineering after graduating.
So, if you or someone you know went to a liberal arts school
and ended
up in engineering, I would be interested to hear your take
on the
situation. Thanks.

Q: Initially posted October 28, 2004 FROM STUDENT MEMBER ARIELLE
IN NJ
I know you need to have a good knowledge of Science and Math
but what else makes up Engineering?
********************
Q: Initially posted October 28, 2004 FROM STUDENT MEMBER ISRRA
A. IN PA
I'm currently a senior and I am working on my applications...
Is it true that you have a better chance of getting in to
a college if you go for an undecided major and if so would
you recommend it?
Another concern is I want to be an optometrist but I have
to go to college in Pittsburgh (either Duquense or Pittsburgh
University) because I can't live without my family. But I
hear that they don't offer optometry and Pittsburgh University
only offers Ophthalmology. How many years would I have to
study, and can I stay in Pittsburgh to complete my education?
Can anyone help enlighten me on the whole PreMed process?
********************
Q: Initially posted October 28, 2004 FROM STUDENT MEMBER SALLY
K. IN CA
I needed some help in my science project. My group and I are
trying to look for a project that is challenging and teaches
something about math or science. However, all our ideas have
been already taken, and I was wondering what is a project
we could do that is not too common and fun to make?
********************
Q: Initially posted October 26, 2004 FROM STUDENT MEMBER JUNGMIN
AMY P. IN CA
I want to major in Physics, and I'm not sure what kind of
jobs
are related to this major. [Could the mentors give examples
of careers for Physics Majors?]
Which university in California is good for this major? What
classes do I
have to take?
[One more question, ] Does dentistry fall into the category
of science?
********************
Q: For GEM-SET Technology Mentors initially posted 10/22/04
FROM STUDENT MEMBER JESS N. IN NJ
My phone was recently run over by a car. I took it to a Verizon
store to get a new one and get numbers downloaded into the
new one from
the damaged one, but only 4 numbers were transferred over.
I don't understand how
only some numbers can get transferred over, but not all of
them,
I just feel like it is one of those things that should be
all or
nothing. Can you explain this to me?
********************
Q: (Initially posted October 22, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER
EMILY M. IN NJ
I'm currently the vice president for my chapter of the Technology
Student Association (TSA).[See
http://www.tsawww.org for more information.] I have a
project for TSA called prepared presentation. They gave us
a topic of "legacy leaders." Since its such a big
topic it is hard to narrow it down so if you could give me
a direction I can go that would be great. Thanks.

Hello GEM-SET,
In our Woman in Engineering class we have to build a small
tower out of Balsa or Basswood. The objective is to design
and build the lightest tower capable of supporting the largest
load over a given opening using a given material (Basswood).
Can you please inform me of a design that my team could use
that would be the best for this assignment.
Other requirements:
Minimum height of structure is 180 mm
Maximum height of structure is 200 mm
Maximum size of footprint can be 100 square mm
The minimum size of the footprint can be 25 square mm
The must be a clear path up the center of the structure for
the testing device
We receive:
6 1/8 X 1/8 X 3 pieces of Balsa r basswood for the structure
With our research on-line we have found that using triangles
are the best design- is this true? If so how do we start to
build those triangles with these materials?
Thank you for your time. We appreciate any answers we receive.

thin very light weight wood. In your opinion what would be

Q: (Initially posted October 5, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER
HOLLY Y. IN CA
Hello Mentors! Thank you for replying to my last message!
I am slightly altering my science project idea. Instead of
comparing different muscle-soothing products, I am going to
improve the rate of penetration of one product. I am going
to insert DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) into the creme. DMSO penetrates
faster than water, and I have checked the ingredients of the
cremes and they do not contain DMSO. DMSO penetrates without
harming the tissues, and I have used this a lot in laboratory
research. Regarding actually doing the experiment, I will
be using meat. Since the muscles of animals are quite similar
to those of humans, I hope that this will work. I will mix
in DMSO and dye into the creme and apply it to the meat. I
will measure the rate of penetration for various depths in
the meat. (I will be taking cross sections of it.) I hope
this works! Please comment on my new idea and method. Thank
you!

Q: (Initially posted September 20, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER
JOSIE K. IN GA
I am doing a science fair experiment on the correlation between
relative
humidity and elevation. Does anyone have any suggestions on
the statistical
analysis that I will have to make? I know I have to do standard
deviation
and chi-squared, however I am not sure where to go from there
( I have not
taken statistics yet) but I would be totally open to any suggestions.
Thanks
again in advance!!

How is it possible that I can download such things as music,

with any wires? How exactly does this whole wireless
technology work?

RESPONSE (Initially posted October 5, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER
JOSIE K. IN GA
This is in response to the questions that Ms. Harbert asked
me in her
response (Thank you again by the way).
1. the relative humidity is discrete (with many pieces of
data)
2. the elevation is discrete (also with many pieces of data)
3. I do not have any special statistical instruments, but
I do have
Microsoft Excel.
