Q: (Initially posted September 23, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER HOLLY Y. IN CA
Hello Mentors, again. I just want your input on my idea that I have now, on my science project for my school. I know that there is a cream called AspirCream and it is used to soothe muscles and joints. Well, I want to test the validity of it. I also want to test the rate of the cream (the time it takes to actually reach the muscle or joint) versus the distance. I have figured out how I am going to be doing this, but I am not sure if this is an interesting enough project or it is sophisticated enough for the high school student. I forgot to mention in my last post that we are not allowed to use human subjects or any other animal with a vertebrae and toxic substances. Surveys are also strongly discouraged by my teacher. Please tell me what you think of my idea! If you have any other science topic ideas, I would much appreciate them!

Q: (Initially posted September 20, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER JOSIE K. IN GA
I am doing a science fair experiment on the correlation between relative
humidity and elevation. Does anyone have any suggestions on the statistical
analysis that I will have to make? I know I have to do standard deviation
and chi-squared, however I am not sure where to go from there ( I have not
taken statistics yet) but I would be totally open to any suggestions. Thanks
again in advance!!

Q: (Initially posted September 18, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER KUNJAL IN NY
My school is a small, all girls school where the emphasis is put on academics, but the interest is not. A friend and I are trying to recreate a science/technology club in our school, but we don't really know what to do to start out. We don't want to focus on the basic sciences that are taught in our school (biology, chemistry, physics...) but we want to get girls interested in other sciences like astronomy, forensic science, marine biology, medicine (etc.) though they all feed off the basic sciences, we want to explore the various other sciences too. Any ideas on what to do (this is our first time heading this club, and it was not a very strong club in past years) therefore any ideas, suggestions or thoughts from mentors or other participants who are in a science club or head it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Gem Set Members,
In honor of water week in October, our GEM-SET group from Eastlake High School (in Chula Vista, California) will be conducting numerous water tests at local ponds, streams, and reservoirs. We will be collecting information on things like the pH of the water, dissolved oxygen content, and pollutants. If any other group would like to join us in our testing, we would like to compare and contrast data to see what water is like around the country.
If interested please send data to GEM-SET@uic.edu

August Question-of-the-Month: ANSWER AND PRIZE WINNER BELOW
Linda Babcock, economics professor at Carnegie Mellon University, found that 57% of graduating men versus only 7% of graduating women negotiated starting salaries, causing a $4,000 gap per year in pay. Babcock also stated that women who consistently negotiated their salary increases earned at least $500,000 to one million more during their careers than women who didn't. After her research finding, Babcock co-wrote a book with Sara Laschever called, Women Don't Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide. According to the book, if more women would initially ask for a higher paycheck, the gender gap in salary would be significantly reduced. The book includes suggestions on how women can ask for more money.

Congratulations to AUGUST PRIZE WINNER Corinne C. in CA who wins a copy of the book. Thanks to all the other GEM-SET student members who participated (Alexis K. in VA, Eunice N. in NJ, Jennifer K. in NJ, Jennifer W. in FL, Jungmin Amy P. in CA, Kathryn T. in VA, Katie D. in KY, Kelly B. in PA, Kim H. in PA, Sylvia P. in CA)

Also, thanks to all the mentors who shared their own negotiating stories. Remember, if you don't ask for the pay raise, you won't get it!

Q: (Initially posted August 27, 2004) FROM GEM-SET Moderators
The question of the month for August focuses on negotiating a salary when you are hired. Mentors-did you negotiate when you were first hired for your first job? Were you offered the job at higher pay than initially offered? What are some negotiating techniques that have worked for you?

GEM-SET DAILY DIGEST FOR September 1, 2004

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Initially posted September 1, 2004 FROM GEM-SET PARTNER SARAH PIERCE IN CHULA VISTA, CA
Thanks!
