Where does dust come from? Why is there more in some cities than in others? Does understanding dust matter for science? All I can think of is that it matters for allergy studies and research which needs a dust free environment. I lived somewhere once where they left equipment in a lot of the rooms that measured the lead in the dust. Can you think of any other reasons studying dust matters? Is a researcher called a dustologist? Seriously.

When I was both on the road (East Coast) and back home at Chicago, I noticed that some flies "bite." It may sound weird but they had a shinny coat and it hurts after a couple of seconds after they land (on people's skin). According to my dad, the "flies were biting him." Can this be true? CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS WEEK'S GEM-SCHOLARS FOR SENDING IN THEIR ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS BELOW. THE SCHOLARS OF THE WEEK ARE MAGGIE K. IN CT, KELLY B. IN PA, CAROLINE H. IN MA, ERIN R. IN KY AND KATHRYN T. IN MA.
Which state in the U.S. has had the most forest fires in 2002? CALIFORNIA
Bonus Questions: What causes more forest fires, lightning or people? PEOPLE CAUSE APPROXIMATELY 80%-90% OF FOREST FIRES. ONLY 10% ARE CAUSED BY
LIGHTNING. Can fire play a beneficial role in the forest ecosystem? KATHRYN T. IN VA WRITES IN: I was surprised to learn that the ecosystem can be helped by fire, but raging forest fires usually cause more devastation than create anything good. A surface fire, on the other hand, helps to burn litter which takes a long time to decay naturally and by burning it releases necessary nutrients. Surface fire can also help with germination of plants such as giant conifers. Prairies, savannas, chaparral and jack forests depend upon fire for maintenance. So, fire can have a positive affect on the ecosystem eliminating bad insects that cause disease and increasing necessary plants. However, large forest fires that lead to people losing their lives and their homes can never be good!

QUIZ-OF-THE-WEEK
Q: What is the Green Belt Movement and who founded it?

A: The Green Belt Movement is an Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) based in Kenya. It was founded in 1977 by Wangari Maathai (Ph.D), and was known then as Envirocare. The strategy involved encouraging community members to plant trees in large areas of public land so as to form green belts of trees. This strategy was embraced by many, with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm, and it was not long before the organization became synonymous with green belts.

Q: (Initially posted on 8/19) FROM ALEXIS K. in VA
As for my actual classes, because of the advice I got through GEMSET, I went heavy on accelerated science and math (GT Geometry, GT Biology, GT History, GT English and gym) and for my two electives chose French and an engineering class. I am very concerned that I have too many GT classes but the counselor said I could do it. What if I mess up my GPA just as I start high school? This could be bad. But I would rather do this and learn a lot than go easy. I just think that colleges don't really give as much credit for pushing yourself as they do for the GPA. I think they say they do, but I don't believe it. At my school, you can get an A only if you score over 95. I don't think anyone will understand that if I had a 94 I would have gotten an A at most schools. The colleges will just see a B and will make the wrong assumptions. Anyone out there disagree with me when I say college admissions people won't understand that my school is tight on A's? I honestly want to hear your view so please write. As for looking forward to classes, I am very excited to hit the books again. I like learning, especially when I get a good teacher. I had a great summer for trying new things and am a little tired, but I am ready to go back. I really want to get good at French because I really enjoy it. English, not as much because I already know the teachers are preferential and a little strange. Science should be great, but math also depends who one lotteries for their teacher. Many of my math teachers have not really taught me math, they just point a lot and assign work. I want to be TAUGHT math. I hope I get a real teacher like I had last year. History will be fine. And Gym,well, bad, bad, bad. I could've taken journalism but the law says I have to have gym. I will work out after school with a team anyway. Well, no getting out of this. I am sure I will learn something. One of my other concerns is that I will not have enough time to keep working on my novel. This is not something the school assigns so they won't care if I have enough time or not. But I care. Oh, I meant to ask, do any of my mentors know where I can get my novel published? Publishing is all news to me. (I have let a few friends read my work and they love it. My novel even inspired them to start their own and now we talk about our stuff with each other. I use that as a way to know there is something interesting with my novel so I think it could get published. Can anyone help me with this?) So that's it about my opinions about classes (and school). I'd still love feedback about the hard classes/GPA thing.

Q: (Initially posted on 8/26) FROM MENTEE RASHELLE C. IN PA
My school is so small that we can only pick from the basic classes you need to get into college. This year I am taking Geometry, and Chemistry. When I am a Senior I will have a choice of AP Calculus (advanced) or applied Calculus. I am thinking of doing AP Calculus. For sciences I have AP Biology and physics I have to take between my Junior and Senior year. Should I take AP Bio in 11th or in 12th? Some of my classmates are taking it in 11th so that when they take physics they will have a higher math background. Is that the way to go, or are they just taking the easy way out? Also, for English in my school I have the option of taking AP English or English 12. I was thinking of trying AP English. I am planning on going to college and am trying to base my decisions on that. I don't think my major will be science, but science comes easier to me than others. Thanks.

This summer, I went to the NHSI (National High School Institute) theatre program in the design/tech concentration. I had a fabulous time! We did all sorts of SET kind of stuff, building sets, hanging and programming lights, running the light and sound boards for the shows, and we even made Comedia del Arte masks!! I know some of you are interested in the arts as well as SET and theatre is a great career that combines the two in many ways! If you have any questions about my summer or theatre feel free to email me at: GEM-SET@uic.edu
