Q: (Initially posted February 26, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER AMY P. IN CA
I have a question about editing websites. Our club has a website and needs
someone to be in charge of it. I'm interested in doing it, but not sure
what to do. Is it really hard? And what kind of programs do you have to
know? I would like to get any kind of information regarding this topic, so
if anybody knows about web editing please inform me! Thank you so much!

Q: (Initially posted February 26, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER ELIZABETH A. IN CO
I am a senior this year. I am wondering if I should go into the agricultural side of biotechnology? I have had four years of agriculture at my high school. I want to help the farmers and [am looking at careers that would connect to the farming industry in a positive way.] If you have any suggestions tell me. Thank you.
********************
Q: (Initially posted February 25, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER RENEE L. IN TX
What is the ecliptic and what objects are always found in our night sky
along the ecliptic?
********************
Q: (Initially posted February 25, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER ALEXIS K. IN VA
I was watching the news and the weather report showed the gulf stream and
showed how it was anticipated to shift from a more northern position to a
southern one. How high up in the atmosphere is the stream? What instrument
is used to detect it? Are instruments floating up in the atmosphere to
measure it? Do airplanes have instruments to record this information? Can
pilots see anything that tells them where the stream is located? How can
anyone possibly anticipate a wind shift?
********************
Q: (Initially posted February 23, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER KIM R. IN IL
I was wondering if anybody knew places in Illinois, preferably in the north
west suburbs, that offered good internship for architecture? I'm interested
in doing one possibly over the summer. Thanks.

Q: (Initially posted February 25, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER JULIE D. IN IL
I have a question to ask about the computer key board.
Why are the letters on the key board arranged the way they are?
I would really like to know the answer because it is really hard to memorize the order.

Q: (Initially posted February 19, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER HOLLY Y. IN CA
Hi. I am a junior right now and a [counselor] at the College Career Center at my high school told me that we should especially take advantage of the upcoming summer. My dream is to attend the 8yr. medical program at University of Southern California, but it is highly selective. To prepare myself to study in the medical field, I am going to a biomedical program at UCSD. However, I recently found out about the USC-iT program. Has anyone heard of this program? It's supposed to be a pre-medical school camp. I'm not sure if I should attend this camp too. And this decision is especially hard for me since my dream school is the USC 8yr. medical program. Would attending this pre-medical camp help me in admissions? Any suggestions?

Q: (Initially posted February 23, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER JEN K. IN NJ
I was wondering what classes you should take to prepare yourself for
engineering in college besides as much math as possible? My school allows
students to take courses that offer college credit; does this mean I don't have
to take the equivalent classes in college?

I was wondering if anyone has taken an AP Psychology course? I just signed up to take it next year as a junior, and I'm wondering how hard it is and what exactly I'm going to learn in that class. My senior year I plan on taking either AP Physics or AP Biology, but I'm not sure which is better for college. I plan on being a pre-med major in college, but I've heard that it's better to take physics in high school. [What do our mentors recommend?]

I am really confused on what to do. I am a freshmen in high school, and I know I am still far away from college and a job, but I need advice on what I should plan on having a career in. For example, I want an internship or something like that over the summer that would help prepare me for the future, but I don't know in what sort of an area I should be looking in. I am a good writer (I am trying to get a story published), and I am good in World History class, and I also like ancient civilizations, experiments in science, and observing things. I am not too keen on stem cell research or working in a lab all day. Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do for a job in the future or what sort of a summer internship/job/opportunity I can do to help me for the future?

Hello! This is my first time to write an email to GEM-SET. I have been interested in building models with LEGO's since I was a kid . So [I am thinking] I would like to become an engineer in construction. However, I am wondering which major should I choose, civil engineering or architect? I only have a brief knowledge on each, but I do know they both are about building and that civil engineering mainly builds roads, bridges and public buildings while architects requires art to build old style buildings. So I WANNA KNOW MORE ABOUT THEIR DIFFERENCES AND ANY OTHER MAJORS THAT FIT ME . Thanks a lot !

I'm a sophomore in high school and I'm thinking of taking college prep classes next year instead of AP like I did this year and instead taking community college classes instead to get all of my general education college classes out of the way. I've also heard that colleges look more highly at junior colleges classes in high school, but I know of a couple of people who couldn't get their classes transferred to the four year colleges that they applied to after high school. Does anyone know if colleges like it when high school students take AP or is it better to take junior college classes? Sometimes I see AP as just a lot of work and that junior college classes would be easier since I am already doing well in AP.

I recently received second place in the school science fair by doing a
project on memory and how color affects it. I would also like to continue
this project next year, so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on
how i could improve this project. Ok. The basics-- we (me and my partner)
tested 20 unbiased individuals and we created a PowerPoint with different
colored backgrounds, which was the independent variable, and we placed 20
equal pictures, which we found on a standardized picture site, and we gave
them a specific time to memorize the pictures and then a specific time to
give them time to write the ones they remembered in order ( because we
switched the order each time so that they could not just memorize the
pictures), on a standardized worksheet. The results were inconclusive, but
we think that yellow worked the best because the individuals remembered
more. The results were inconclusive because the statistical data that we
worked out (chi-squared and other statistical analysis) came out
inconclusive. So, any suggestions? Thankz in advance!

Q: (Initially posted February 2, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER ALEXIS K. IN VA
I just returned from the JASON Project's live telecast at National
Geographic. This year's expedition was to the rain forest of Bara Colorado
Island, Panama. I recommend getting involved with JASON if you like
science, math, tech, engineering. You can always sign up as a home school
person and self pace yourself through the material but will then have access
to the incredible web site. I highly recommend this stuff. It could also
help you think of science fair projects. I teach it to younger girl scouts
and have a lot of fun with it. Go to www.jasonproject.org
Anyway, through Girl Scouts I am going on an Outward Bound Costa Rica
trip this summer (can't wait). I have done some research about Panama's rain
forest and some about Costa Rica's, but after today telecast, I decided I
wanted to learn more about common products and medicines that we have as a
direct result of rain forest research or use of rain forest plants, animals,
and insects. I could use some recommendations for websites about this. Also,
I would like to know a lot more about rain forest insects, hummingbirds,
and ocelots and could use some sites for that. By the way, did you know that
rain forest sloths live way up in the canopy but climb (slowly) all the way
down to the forest floor to poop. Because of this they only poop about once
a week. Go figure. I also recently learned that penguin poop is pink.
Seriously now, this is the stuff that can make science a riot!

Questions for Mentors:

Q: (Initially posted February 3, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER JAE Y. IN CA
I am thinking about going into the field of psychology. I want to know what
are some job titles for people who work at a hospital and talk to
people that are in need of mental health services.  For example if people are considering suicide or just have a problem and she talks to them and guides them into a right way?
I know that it is kind of the same as being a counselor, but I want to know what's the better
term that people use to call those kinds of people? and what do I have to do
to become one of those people?

Q: (Initially posted February 3, 2004) FROM STUDENT MEMBER KIM R. IN IL
Hi, I was wondering what are some good colleges for majoring in
architecture? I know Cornell is supposedly the top college, but my parents
would never be able to pay for me to go there. Also, what are good minors
if you're majoring in architecture?

I'm in a program called Destination Imagination. We must build a structure as part of our problem. I have a few questions about building designs. Which simple shapes and designs would support the most weight? Which beams (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal) provide the most support? Where would be the best place to put support beams or other devices? Any other building tips would be helpful. Thanks!!!

Hi. I was wondering if any of the mentors out there are doctors in a
hospital, specifically in the field of neonatology. I am very interested in a career
in medicine and any information on any of those careers would be very helpful.
