1) My current employment is a unique situation. I work in technical
support, which includes phone support, software design, testing,
teaching training classes, and visiting clients to help them with
projects. Our software is for civil engineers and surveyors, so
I am part of the civil engineering division. It is unique because
the entire division is made of civil engineers doing technical support.
I am also the contact for all of our International clients in terms
of technical support.
2) I have 2 degrees, a BA in Physics that I received from Augustana
College in Sioux Falls, SD and a BS in Civil Engineering which I
received from Washington University in St. Louis.
3) Currently, I would say that the most exciting part of my
career is the traveling. I enjoy traveling to different places and
helping clients with different projects. It is fun to meet people
from different places and find out how things are designed differently
around the country and the world.
4) The toughest barriers I have run into is breaking new ground
for managers who aren't used to having women work for them. After
3 years of working in my current position, I am still the only woman
in the engineering/programming division. For example, I had no examples
of dress code for women. The handbook said that I had to wear a
tie. When I started to travel, they refused to send me on the road
with any males because they did not want to pay for 2 rooms. It
has been a constant challenge.
