Barb Kontogiannis is currently the Mission Success Manager for the Atlas Launch Vehicle Program at Lockheed Martin. Prior to managing this independent process review department, she was a manager in the propulsion design area, and has been a propulsion design and development engineer since starting her career in 1989. One of the large projects in her career was heading up the development and qualification program for a new derivation of the upper stage rocket engine used on Atlas -over sixty of those new engines have now flown successfully.

Barb's interest in space began when she was about ten years old. After reading a book about the universe, with lots of pictures, she decided that someday she would like to travel to other planets. Although she never pursued becoming an astronaut, she followed her dreams into the world of aerospace engineering. Barb earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 1988, followed by a Master of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford in 1989. She then joined the Space Systems Division of General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) where she has worked on various types of rocket and space plane propulsion. Barb is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

The most exciting part of Barb's job is launching rockets! She travels to Cape Canaveral Florida several times a year to participate in the Atlas rocket launches. She can think of no other career that would give her goosebumps -watching a rocket launch is an experience like no other.

Barb has found that as her career advances and her personal priorities change, the toughest barriers tend to change as well. Being a young woman in a managerial position has had its challenges. However, currently the toughest barrier for Barb is one of finding balance, between her professional goals and raising a toddler.
