Birgit Sorgenfrei graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Electrical Engineering from Michigan Technological University in
February 1991. During her undergraduate studies, she interned at
the General Motors Corporation, the Medical Systems Division of
General Electric Company, and IBM. While studying at MTU, Birgit
was awarded many honors and scholarships for her leadership and
academic skills and considers the culmination of these to be an
award for the "Michigan Technological University Outstanding Undergraduate
Student for the Michigan Association of Governing Boards of State
Universities 1990."
Upon graduation, Birgit interned for Schlumberger Industries in
Chasseneuil-du-Poitou, France. She pursued graduate work at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, completing a Masters of Science
Degree in Electrical Engineering in September 1993. Following this,
Birgit interned at the University of Hanover, Hanover, Germany.
Birgit is currently working to complete an MBA at the University
of Michigan (Ann Arbor).
Birgit joined the Ford Motor Company in June 1994, working initially
in the Scientific Research Laboratories then for Visteon Automotive
Systems, and most recently in the Lincoln Mercury Business Office.
Her work has included research on sensors for electrical power assist
steering systems, component and system radio design, and vehicle
planning.
Birgit has been active in the Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
and was recently awarded the SWE Distinguished New Engineer Award
2000. She has served as Meeting Planning Chair (1995-96), Vice President
of Career Guidance (1996-97), President (1997-98), Section Representative
of the Detroit Section (1998-99), Vice President of Student Services
(1999-2000).
Birgit enjoys sharing her home with her husband, Allen, four year
old daughter Rebecca and four-month-old daughter, Evelyn.
