Christine M. Kuta
Patent Attorney
Bergman Kuta, LLP
Cambridge, MA

As a patent attorney, I help inventors patent their inventions. I write patent applications and represent inventors before the U.S. Patent Office. I also handle other areas of intellectual property law like licensing and copyrights. To qualify to be a patent attorney, I had to obtain a technical degree, a law degree, pass a state bar and also pass an exam given by the Patent Office called the patent bar.

I started off my career as an engineer. I studied engineering in college and when I graduated, I went to work for a large computer company. My first job was researching and developing new materials and manufacturing processes for manufacturing computers. Later, I switched to software development and worked on software for engineers to use in their work. After working for so many years as an engineer, I thought it might be time to do something new so I took an opportunity to go to law school and I became a patent attorney.

One of the best things about being a patent attorney is that it is a very positive specialty of the law. Clients are proud of their inventions and I am able to help them add value to their work by helping them to obtain patents.

On the whole, all of my careers have been very satisfying. I have been able to travel to interesting places for all my jobs. I spent a lot of time making things when I was doing research. It was an incredible thrill the first time I got something from the shop after I sent in one of my designs. Software engineering was very exciting because I was working on the newest computers and with the newest software. Being a lawyer has enabled me to do socially positive work such as legal aid for the poor.
