I am currently an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the Unversity
of Southern Maine where I joined the faculty full time in 1999.
Prior to 1999 I had been a part time member of the Chemistry Department
at USM and held a research and development position at a local biotechnology
firm. I earned my PhD in organic chemistry from the University of
Colorado at Boulder in 1990. The research projects currently underway
in my laboratory involve bioconjugate chemistry, immunochemistry
and organic synthetic methodology. The courses I have recently taught
at USM include General Chemistry lecture and laboratory, Chemistry
for the Health Sciences lecture and laboratory, and Organic Chemistry
lecture and laboratory. There are many reasons why I love my job.
Some of them include: a high level of excitement, I get to work
on my own research, I believe that teaching science is a very noble
career, working with students is awesome, and chemistry is a fun
subject to teach. I do not feel that I have had to face any real
serious barriers. Sometimes being a female in a male dominated profession
is challenging but it has never prevented me from doing what needs
to get done. I can say that I have had to continually work hard
at everything I do but I don't consider that a barrier, because
hard work has its rewards!
