Diana Smith
Software Development Manager
Microsoft
Redmond, WA

I'm currently a Development Manager at Microsoft Corporation in the area of Compensation and Benefits IT. I manage a group of developers, work closely with a test group and program management group to develop, support, enhance and trouble shoot internal (to Microsoft) applications in the area of Compensation and Benefits.

I graduated from Whitworth College in Spokane Washington in 1996 with a double major; BA in Computer Science and BA in Business Administration. Out of college I started working for Metropolitan Mortgage in their IT department doing Visual Basic and SQL Server development. I was able to learn ASP/VBScript while working there, which helped me secure my first job with Microsoft. In 1998 I moved to the Puget Sound area and contracted for MS in their Product Support Services division supporting Microsoft Corporation's Premier customers doing ASP to Database development. This was an awesome job that helped me to get "immersed" in web development technologies and allowed me to use and perfect my web development skills. About 9 months later I moved it the Recruiting and Review IT area at MS as a developer and took a full time position about 3 months later. Since then I have worked in the Human Resources IT space as an Applications Developer and in the last year and a half I was promoted to a Development Lead and then a Development Manager.

Management has been a great experience for me, it stretches my people/soft skills and is rewarding. It does however, leave less time for me to do development, which is what I enjoy most. I strive to keep up on new technologies and hope to get back to doing more development.

Outside of work, I am enjoying my 10th year of marriage with the best husband I could ever ask for and building my second home. I have two wonderful golden retrievers and enjoy the outdoors, boating, camping, spending time with family and cooking.
