I am currently Senior Vice President of Academics and Professor
of Computer Science at Neumont University in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Although my university degrees (from Caltech and Berkeley) are in
Mechanical Engineering, most of my career thus far has been related
to software engineering and business. After grad school, I co-founded
a software company called ArsDigita Corporation, which was later
acquired by Red Hat. At ArsDigita, I led a software development
division in Cambridge, MA, ran the company's London, UK office,
and engineered dozens of enterprise Web applications and a handful
of voice applications. My open-source software for building online
communities and e-commerce sites has been adopted by thousands of
Internet application operators worldwide. I also spent one year
in Guatemala as a Visiting Professor of Computer Science at Galileo
University.
I've co-authored two books: Early Adopter VoiceXML (Wrox Press,
2001) and Software Engineering for Internet Applications (MIT Press,
due out in early 2006).
Software engineering is an exciting field for women to go into.
It's fun because you get to solve challenging puzzles, collaborate
with team members, and work with an interesting variety of clients.
But, most importantly, with software you can change the world --
whether you're creating medical applications, enabling communication
in remote parts of the world, or developing desktop apps that will
save businesses time and money.
