I was a classroom science teacher for 33 years, and am currently
teaching at Shawnee Mission South High in Overland Park, Kansas
having retired from Raytown South High School. I have also taught
at Penn Valley Community College and at UMKC as well as serving
as an adjunct professor in anatomy and physiology for UMKC's High
School College Prep Program.
I have earned a Master's Degree in Biology from UMKC as well as
60 hours over the MA in chemistry, weather studies, biology, physics,
gifted education, and earth science.
Classroom teaching is my favorite area of education. I try to do
something exciting each day. However, I have been strong in starting
new programs such as organizing the Missouri Science Olympiad program,
the Rockhurst Science Knowledge Bowl, Avila's Young Women Science,
Mathematics, and Technology Challenge, the UMKC High School Science,
Mathematics, and Technology Institute, and serving as founder and
executive editor of the InterACTION newsletter for over 10 years.
I have received over three dozen local, state, and national awards
for excellence in science teaching. I was inducted to the Mid-America
Education Hall of Fame and was a 1991 recipient of the Presidential
Award for Excellence in Science Teaching sponsored by the White
House and the National Science Foundation.
The toughest barriers for me have been those who do not desire
to work as a team and have trouble allowing others to lead them.
Too often, this has been done by males. Males have also been my
greatest support as well.
