I began college thinking I wanted to be an attorney, so I studied history and political science in California. One summer I got a temporary two-week job from a friend to fill in for a secretary. I tried very hard to do a good job, and they noticed! They offered me a position entering data into a computerized telephone system, and I eventually moved on to more challenging computer tasks. I then went to a company where I prepared software for engineers, and was sent to Sweden for a year. I was promoted to system test engineer, because I showed them I could work hard and think logically. My job was to try to confuse a telephone operator's phone system until it stopped working, and then change some of the software to make it work again. I guess I was firmly entrenched in the technology field from then on…

I finished my college degree in California, got married, had a baby, and moved to Massachusetts. I eventually went back to work on a temporary job (non-technical) for a friend of mine in a bank. One day I helped the Vice President with his computer, and he was very impressed with my skills. He offered me a job to be their technology person for the whole department! Since then, I have been studying technology, got a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer certificate (MSCE), and have worked for different companies. I now work as a Senior Technology Specialist on a team; we are responsible for all of the computers that run the entire business. I also get to design new systems that my company business requires.

I recently started graduate school at Simmons College in Boston to get an MBA (Masters in Business Administration). Simmons has the only all-women MBA program in the entire country! They work very hard to mold us into good leaders.

The message of my story is to be aware of, and take advantage of, opportunities that come your way. If you keep your mind open and work hard, you just never know how great your career can turn out!
