How do I put 22 years in the engineering field into a short bio?
Let me try.
My current position is Mechanical Design/Burner Fabrication Manager
for the Global Engineering Division of Cabot Corporation, a diversified
company of specialty chemicals. My group designs and fabricates
the large equipment for the manufacture of 'Carbon Black'. You know
--- that black stuff in your copy machine toner that you hate to
touch. It is used widely. A few examples; inkjet printer cartridges,
auto and truck tires, paints, make up, plastics. My team consists
of mechanical designers, machinists, welders, as well as materials,
inventory , scheduling and office administration folks. We support
26 plants around the world by producing and/or replacing their volume
manufacturing burner equipment.
How I got to where I am today is hardly impressive or traditional.
A road of challenging hills to conquer. I started with an Associates
Degree in Commercial/Industrial Art. I got my B.S. Mechanical Engineering
Certification years later through my employer at the time, Digital
Equipment Corp.'s, Advanced Learning Program. It took a total of
nine years, working days with college at night.
There have been so many exciting facets in my career it is hard
to focus in on just one
I prefer to relish them all: * Travel
* Meeting new people and cultures *Staying on the cutting edge of
technology, while holding on to the old 'base' principles. * Leadership
* Making a difference * Creative thinking * Actually seeing what
we design and fabricate producing product. All of it exhilarating.
If I am to expound on a personal difficulty on my road to 'here',
I will mention the point that was (and maybe still is) what people
perceive of me when first meeting. Proving myself as a serious contender
a challenge. I am petite, 5'1", 106 lbs. with what some call
a perpetual sweet (?) grin on my face. But that is me! I was determined
to be accepted for what I am and to be firm with myself not to fall
into the position of being someone I am not or acting tough just
to fit in. Sweet can be just as strong, make tough decisions and
produce as much if not more than any stone faced hard-liner - but
I had to prove it.
Over and over again. It is worth it.
Overall, I am proud of who I am, what I do and how I got here.
I have lived through numerous mergers, consolidations and plant
closings, and have found that this leads to new opportunities that
can be even more exciting than the ones left behind. My new position
here at Cabot Corporation has opened a new opportunity in an industry
I knew little about 4 months ago and proves there are so many challenges
for women engineers in this ever changing world.
