Judy McGoogan
Systems Architect/Systems Engineer
Lucent Technologies

  1. Current career position:
I will retire in July after a varied and enjoyable 25-year career in Engineering and Computer Science. My latest assignment is as a Systems Architect/Systems Engineer in the Broadband Switching Concept Center at Lucent Technologies in Naperville, Illinois. In this job, I've worked in a team of 17 people to plan the new features that will be added to a hardware and software platform that's just now being released. This platform is being used as the basis for other groups in Lucent to build many other applications - mostly for Wireless Telecommunications. My title is: Distinguished Member of Technical Staff (DMTS).
  2. Education:
I have a B.S. in mathematics and an M.S. in computer science from the University of Oklahoma. I've also taken 1-3 weeks of technical classes each year at Lucent and attended and/or presented papers at many conferences.
  3. The most exciting part of my career:
Our research into designing a future architecture for the Telecommunications Network has influenced several Lucent products. One of the most exciting parts of my job was applying that research in our "Forward Looking Work" group. There I pulled together a small team of people with a broad range of expertise, and we began to design a prototype for a brand new product that uses some exciting leading edge technology. Another great experience was serving as the co-chair of the Real-time Committee at the Object Management Group (OMG). I worked with some leading technical people from all over the world. We created a "roadmap" of what needed to be done to improve the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), so that it could be used in real-time, embedded computer systems. Over time, we created standards for many of these capabilities. It's been rewarding to watch lots of companies all over the world build and sell new software products using those standards.
  4. The toughest barriers to overcome to arrive at my current position:
I've had to work hard to learn to "sell" my ideas. One of my biggest frustrations has been that it's often been difficult to get buy-in to some of the new ideas I've proposed. People are often reluctant to change what they've been doing to try out new things.
  5. Background info:
My husband and I have two adult daughters and a son-in-law. I am a member of Women in Leadership at Lucent (WILL) and it's Technical Women's Group. I am deputy director for Region H in the National Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and I am a member of the Strategic Planning Committee and a Past President of the Chicago Section of SWE. I support the research and patient outreach work of the Kidney Cancer Society. I sing in our church choir, and I am president of their Questors Sunday School class. I enjoy bridge, golf, travel, and theater.
