Lori Kane
Web Applications Programmer
Harvard University-Division of Continuing Education
Cambridge, MA

I grew up the child of a gadget guy. My Dad had to have one of everything
including various computers. Growing up in this atmosphere made me
interested in the computer field, so when it came time to head off to
college, I chose that as my major. I attended the University of North
Texas outside of Dallas where I received a bachelor's degree in computer
information systems.

During college I worked at IBM doing software support and gained some
valuable technical skills. After college, I worked at EDS for five years
as a systems engineer focusing mostly on client-server programming. My
interests in education then led me to Harvard University's Division of
Continuing Education where I currently work as a Web programmer providing
online services to students. I recently completed a master's degree here.

I've found that keeping up with the ever-changing nature of technology is
one of the toughest challenges I face. However, this is also one of the
most exhilarating aspects of this field and I'm often amazed at what I can
accomplish with patience and the willingness to teach myself.

I find the computer programming field to be fabulously exciting and
rewarding and I hope young women will find it equally thrilling.
