Lisa M. Smith
Software Engineer, Tru64 UNIX Local File Systems
Compaq Computer Corporation
Nashua, NH

I am currently working for Compaq Computer Corporation as a Software Engineer on Compaq's UNIX Operating System, Tru64 UNIX. Specifically, I work on the Advanced File System, designing, developing, and implementing new features for the File System.

I've been working at Compaq for a year and a half, and it is my first full-time job. I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a BS in Computer Science in May 2000, and started my career at Compaq. Previously, I interned for a college summer at Hewlett-Packard in Vancouver, WA, and another summer I did research at CMU. Both of these experiences helped me figure out what career I wanted to pursue (or not pursue!).

One of the most difficult obstacles I had to overcome was hearing guys in school and college say "Girls aren't good at computer science." or "You got in because you are a girl." Even though I felt confident in my abilities, it took a lot of patience and determination to ignore those comments. When I looked at the facts, the test scores, and the understanding of concepts, I was on equal ground with those guys, if not higher.
