My current career position is as a research biologist for the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency at the Atlantic Ecology Division
in Narragansett, RI. I have been there for 4 years now and am doing
research on the effects of watershed land use and nutrient inputs
on neighboring marshes and estuaries. Much of my training has been
with marine invertebrates, and I have recently been working with
plants, fish and other mobile nekton. I received a Bachelor of Arts
in Biological Sciences from the University of Delaware, a Master
of Science in Marine, Estuarine and Environmental Science from the
University of Maryland, and a Master of Science in Ecology and Evolution
from Rutgers University. The most exciting part of my career is
the fact that I spend a large part of my time outside conducting
fieldwork. Sometimes I am sampling fish from a boat, collecting
animals or plants from a marsh, or diving as a member of the EPA
dive team. I think the toughest barrier toward my current position
was a labeling of my abilities based on my educational level.
