Mamie W. Moy, daughter of early Chinese immigrants, is a native
Texan. Her education includes graduation from the Incarnate Word
Academy (now Incarnate Word High School) in San Antonio, a B. A.
degree from the University of Texas at Austin and the M. S. degree
from the University of Houston.
She is Professor of Chemistry at the University of Houston and
the Director of the SMART Center which she founded to promote and
provide innovative Science and Mathematics Applied Resources for
Teachers. In her tenure at UH, she has taught various levels of
chemistry, served as Associate Chair of the Chemistry Department
and Director of both the graduate and undergraduate programs. She
served on numerous University level councils, committees and task
forces impacting the academic programs.
Mamie Moy is involved in the development of strong precollege chemistry
programs, particularly those for the enhancement of K-12 teaching.
She was instrumental in the formation of various organizations for
high school chemistry teachers, including the Metropolitan Houston
Chemistry Teachers Association and Associated Chemistry Teachers
of Texas. She has worked on and directed NSF and Eisenhower Grants
Programs for teacher enhancement and curriculum development programs
including MMSEC (Texas statewide math and science program for minority
students), the American Chemical Society's FACETS, OpChem, and ChemCom
Programs, Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation Summer Institutes
for Teachers. She directs the Robert A. Welch Foundation Summer
Scholar Program, a residential research program for outstanding
high school students. She is an affiliate of the Center for Chemical
Education (Miami University) and collaborates with the Houston Museum
of Natural Science, Children's Museum of Houston and is active in
professional societies.
In addition to structured programs, her outreach program includes
K-12 in-service workshops, visits to schools and chemistry demonstration
shows for school children, particularly the SAY Yes to a Youngster's
Future - a National Urban Coalition Program, Kids Science Expo -
An annual National Chemistry Week Event, Expanding Your Horizons
- An annual AAUW program, Building a Pipeline to the Sciences -
An annual program sponsored by Cole chemical Company, and the general
community. She hosts and co-directs Teaching Science with Toys,
a two week summer institute, sponsored by the National Petrochemical
Refiners Association, for elementary teachers.
She received the University of Houston Teaching Excellence Award
and has been recognized by national, state and local organizations
for her many contributions to science and education. She was honored
by the YWCA as one of the 1996 Outstanding Women in the City of
Houston. The Asian Pacific American Women Leadership Institute awarded
her a "Star Thrower Award" in recognition of her efforts
in making a difference in science and math education. She was selected
a Woman on The Move - 2001 and nominated for the Texas Women's Hall
of Fame 2002. She was awarded a "Distinguished Service to Science
Education" by the National Science Teachers Association at
the Association's annual conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
on March 29, 2003.
She is active in professional organizations. She served as Chair,
of the Southeastern Texas (now Greater Houston) Section of the American
Chemical Society, on the Texas Academic Skills Council of the Texas
Higher Education Coordinating Board, and on the Science Advisory
Board of Aldine Independent School District. Currently, she is a
Councilor of the Greater Houston Section of the American Chemical
Society, Vice President of the Engineering, Science and Technology
Council of Houston, a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater
Houston Section of the American Chemical Society, a member of the
Board of Directors of the YWCA of Houston, and the Science Advisory
Boards of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Texas Children's
Museum. At the national level she served on the American Chemical
Society's Committee on Minority Affairs, Vice Chair of the Committee
on Nominations and Elections,
Chair of the Hospitality Committee and Long Range Planning Committee
of the Division of Chemical Education. She was recently elected
to serve on the Committee on Committees of the American Chemical
Society at the National level.
Her involvement at the University of Houston extends beyond teaching.
Currently she is Treasurer of the University of Houston College
of Natural Science and Mathematics Alumni Association.
Her other community involvements have included serving on and chairing
the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Chinese Culture, the Scholarship
Committee of the Chinese Professional Club, the Las Palmas Homeowners
Association.
